Josephine Poppleton, 82

Of Newton passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, at Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Born on May 8, 1943 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Marcellin Aucoin and Elizabeth (Chiasson) Aucoin. Josephine grew up in Terre Noire, Nova Scotia, where she was the eldest daughter of 15 children. In 1961, she immigrated to Waltham, MA, and in 1965 married James Poppleton. They shared 49 years of marriage until his passing in 2015.

Josephine worked passionately as a house cleaner for more than 40 years and was known for her exceptional skills as a home cook and baker. She enjoyed playing the lottery, card games like cribbage and 200 at the French American Victory Club and Scandinavian Cultural Center, completing puzzles, and crocheting with her friends every weekend at Auburndale Community Library. She was a lifelong animal lover, and Josephine adored her cats over the years and later devoted her knitting talents to making baby blankets, which she generously donated to local shelters as cozy cat beds.

Above all, Josephine treasured her family. She shared a home with her daughter and son-in-law, and loved her two grandsons. She played an active role in their upbringing and was deeply proud of all their accomplishments.

Josephine is survived by her daughter Cecelia Kwartler and son-in-law Bruce, her beloved grandsons David and Timothy, her siblings including three brothers, Joseph Aucoin, Simon Aucoin and his wife Nancy, Gerard Aucoin and his wife Karen, and six sisters, Marie Sophie Shomphe and her husband Seward, Therese Doucet and her husband Brian, Marguerite Cormier and her husband Gilles, Paulette Shaw and her husband Victor, Cecile Boisvert and her husband Daniel, and Bernadette Leblanc and her husband Eugene, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers Bernie Aucoin, Sam Aucoin, Daniel Aucoin, and her sisters Joan Burns and Marie Luce Phillips. She was a devoted godmother to Brian Burns.

Family and Friends are invited to gather and remember the love & friendship Josephine shared with so many others in her lifetime during Visiting Hours in the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco and Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM on Tuesday evening, September 30th from 5pm until 7pm. Parking attendants will be on duty.

A Funeral Mass in celebration of Josephine's life will be held at Saint Michael's Church in East Margaree, Nova Scotia, Canada on Thursday November 6th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow immediately after at Saint Michael's Cemetery in East Margaree, Nova Scotia, Canada.
