Joshua Shabazz Faison, born to the late Eboni Joackson, affectionately known as Josh, passed away on September 6, 2024, at the young age of 22. Born on April 21, 2002, in Wake County, North Carolina, Josh's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and resilience.
From the moment he entered this world, Josh's life was shaped by the unconditional love of those around him. Though he was not raised by his biological mother, at a young age, Josh was blessed with a network of caring individuals who stepped in to fill the void. His grandmother, the late Shirley Faison, took on the responsibility of raising Josh and his sister, Teanna Holder, until her passing. It was then that Jamel Jones, whom Josh lovingly called "Pops," stepped into the role of father figure and raised Josh as his own.
Josh's upbringing was unique, characterized by a blend of biological and chosen family members who all played crucial roles in shaping the young man he would become. Among these were Lynn and Johnnie Carr, whom Josh considered his Godparents and held dear to his heart. The love and support he received from this diverse family network instilled in Josh a deep sense of gratitude and pride in his unconventional family dynamic.
As a student at Rosewood High School, Josh's vibrant personality and infectious smile quickly made him a beloved figure among his peers and teachers alike. His passion for basketball was evident to all who knew him, and he could often be found on the court, honing his skills and reveling in the joy of the game. Beyond sports, Josh had a profound love for music, frequently challenging friends and family to impromptu freestyle rap battles that would leave everyone in stitches.
Josh's quick wit and readiness to engage in friendly debates were hallmarks of his personality. He approached these discussions with enthusiasm and confidence, always eager to prove his point while maintaining a spirit of good-natured competition. This intellectual curiosity and willingness to engage with others on a variety of topics endeared him to many and showcased his sharp mind.
At the age of 18, Josh made the decision to live with the Carr family, under whose care he successfully completed his high school education. This move was a testament to the strong bond he had formed with Lynn Carr, who had become a mother figure in his life. Despite this change in living arrangements, Josh maintained close ties with all branches of his extended family, including his father Jamel and the Jones family.
Throughout his life, Josh's relationship with his sister Teanna Holder remained a cornerstone of his support system. He often looked to his older sister for advice and protection, their bond unbreakable despite the challenges life presented. Similarly, Josh's connection with his "Pops," Jamel Jones, was one of deep trust and affection. No matter the hour, Josh would reach out to Jamel for guidance or simply to share his thoughts on life.
Josh's faith was an important aspect of his life, and he split his time between two churches: Bethel Church of Goldsboro, associated with the Carr family, and Salvation Deliverance and Healing Ministries of Goldsboro, connected to the Jones family. This dual spiritual connection reflected the harmonious blend of influences in Josh's life.
As a young father, Josh leaves behind a son, Joshua Cartier Faison-Toler, who will undoubtedly carry on his father's legacy of love and laughter. Josh's memory will be cherished by his extensive network of siblings, including Teanna Holder, Nikki Dixion, Jykie Barden, Bree Jones, Shelly (AJ) Mundle, Ja'lem Jones, Jabari Jones, Ra'John Jones, Jahkeam Jones-Davis, and Jordan (Meagan) Carr. He is also survived by his grandmother Tanger Jones and great-grandmother Mary Elliott.
Josh's uncles, Rasheen (Regina) Faison, Ralph Brown, and Will (Ha'neefa) Best, along with his nieces Chasidy Branch, Ashtyn Mundle, Londyn Brewer, and Yari Jones, and nephews Collin Carr, Cameron Carr, and Kyloh Jones, will all miss his vibrant presence in their lives. Special mention must be made of Teronzo Hicks, Jr. (TJ), whom Josh considered a brother, and Diamond Hicks, affectionately called "Ma," both of whom were constant companions in Josh's life.
Joshua Shabazz Faison's journey on this earth may have been brief, but the impact he made on those around him was profound and lasting. His ability to light up a room with his smile, his passion for basketball and music, his love for spirited debates, and his unwavering devotion to his family and friends have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. As we bid farewell to Josh, we celebrate a life lived with joy, love, and an unbreakable spirit. His memory will continue to inspire laughter, love, and unity among the many lives he touched.
Funeral Services will be observed on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 4PM from the sanctuary of Bethel Church, 2308 N. William St., Goldsboro, NC 27530. Apostle Will Best, officiating and Elder Jamel Jones will deliver Words of Comfort.
Services of Love & Compassionate Care have been entrusted to Williams & Ashford Funeral Directors and Cremations, LLC.
