Joyce E. (Flodder) Carpenter, age 85, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Monday evening, December 16, 2024, at her home in Morgantown.
Joyce was born on February 28, 1939, in Batesville, Indiana, to the late John and Velma (Schultz) Flodder. A 1957 graduate of Oldenburg Academy, Joyce furthered her education by studying Biology at Marian College. Her teaching career began in 1957 at St. Louis Catholic School in Batesville, followed by a position at St. Bartholomew Catholic School in Columbus, where she taught from 1962 to 1975. In addition to teaching, Joyce ran Columbus Janitorial Inc. from 1965 to 1975. Later, she owned and operated J. Carpenter Construction for 11 years and transitioned into owning several rental properties. Joyce was also a skilled professional wallpaper hanger.
A woman of deep Catholic faith, Joyce was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Edinburgh and served as the organist at St. Columba Catholic Church in Columbus. She was also involved in her community as a former member of the Tri Kappa Sorority, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (where she played the violin), the Edinburgh Homemakers Club, Edinburgh PTO, and served as President of the Edinburgh Swim Team. Joyce had a love for travel, cherished time with her grandchildren and found peace at her vacation home in Madison on the Ohio River, where she enjoyed watching the barges pass by.
Joyce is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, John L. "Jack" Carpenter, whom she married on June 2, 1962, in Oldenburg. She is also survived by her children: Samuel "Sam" (fiancée, Jamie Armes) Carpenter of Nashville, Abby (Jon) Travers of Martinsville, and Sarah Hall of Morgantown; siblings: Ross (Linda) Flodder of Greentown and Mark (Molly) Flodder of Muncie; grandchildren: Sherilee Carpenter of Green Valley, AZ, Sarina (Andrew) Hartwyk of Richmond, Scott (Hayley) Carpenter of Austin, TX, Spencer (Elizabeth) Carpenter of Charlestown, SC, Jordan Hall of Morgantown, Shelby (Chad) Weaver of Martinsville and Tori (fiancé, Djimmon Ogega) Travers of Franklin; great-grandchildren: Desi, Ele, Eva, Leo, Grace, Korbyn, Joseph, Oaklynn, Carter, Brynlee, Beckham and Bo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Jason Hall.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. A funeral service, conducted by Pastor Nathan Janssen, will take place on Friday, December 20, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
