Joyce Hartman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hackman Family Funeral Homes - Hackman Chapel on Aug. 8, 2025.
Joyce Brubaker Hartman, age 68, of Sturgis, Michigan, died at home on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

Joyce was the youngest daughter of the late Dean and Vivian (Bowman) Brubaker.

She attended Centreville High School where she was part of the School to Work program. Following graduation in 1976, Joyce worked for years in Food Services at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.

In her youth, she was baptized and attended Locust Grove Mennonite Church, where she loved singing in the choir and participating with the youth group. Joyce loved collecting dolls and Precious Moments figurines, her cats, anything colored red, barbecued chicken, and watching NASCAR racing.

On May 23, 2008, she married Tom Hartman, who survives. Following diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis, Tom cared for Joyce at home. He was devoted to her in his care and managed her challenging care needs faithfully since 2020. Joyce also received care from Hospice in the last weeks of her life and died peacefully in her sleep.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Tom, are her brother, Cliff Brubaker (Marilyn) and brother-in-law, Roy Bergey (married to Vi Dutcher). Joyce loved her nephew and nieces, Josh Brubaker, Katie Brubaker Sanford, Lisa Bergey Lehman and Krista Bergey. She asked about them often and loved to see pictures of them and her six great-nephews and nieces. Joyce faithfully prayed for family moves, surgeries, and events of concern to her.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Dean and Vivian Brubaker, and her sister, Linda Bergey.

Private services were held Thursday, August 7th at Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes in Sturgis. Mr. James Carpenter officiated the service. A graveside committal followed the service at Locust Grove Cemetery in Burr Oak.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Hartman's memory consider Locust Grove Cemetery, c/o: Locust Grove Church, 29525 Findley Rd., Burr Oak, MI 49030.
