Joyce Armistead Horsley of Nashville, Tennessee, formerly of Atlanta, Georgia died on October 9, 2024.
Mrs. Horsley spent her childhood in Moss Point, Mississippi, where her parents and grandparents helped to shape her strong Christian faith. She attended Stevens College and graduated from Auburn University, where she met the love of her life, Joe Horsley. Their life together took them to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and Atlanta, where they lived for 46 years.
In 1983, Mrs. Horsley helped to establish DASS (Downtown Atlanta Senior Services), which later became The Center for Positive Aging. As Executive Director of the non-profit, she created an innovative partnership among churches, health systems and community organizations. After over 20 years of volunteer service, in 1986, Mrs. Horsley was presented with a Gannett Community Service Award recognizing her dedicated advocacy for senior citizens. Retirement took Joyce and Joe back to Auburn, Alabama, where she lived for seven years before moving to Nashville in 2013 to be close to her daughter and family. As faith was a central part of Joyce's life, she was an active member at North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, First Presbyterian Church of Auburn and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville. Always seeking to learn more about her faith, she enjoyed being a participant in many Bible study classes and served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Horsley's love of cooking kept her home always open to many friends and family – she was the epitome of "the hostess with the mostest!" She was always thinking of others and actively sought to help those in need. Joyce, or Muz as her grandchildren called her, was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Mrs. Horsley was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth (Billinger) and Charles Bonner Armistead and her husband, Joseph Stafford Horsley. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Horsley Riegle (Scott), grandchildren, Lauren Riegle Mitchell (Trevor) and Joseph Warren Riegle (Kate), great-grandchildren, Margot Ellis Mitchell and Weldon Stafford Mitchell, sister, Mary Armistead Gaines and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation Wednesday, October 16 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3900 West End Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee at 10:00 am with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11:00 am in the sanctuary.

My first memory of Joyce Horsley occurred at North Avenue Presbyterian Church, when she hired me for employment with the Center for Positive Aging. Her joyful positive life style made her my mentor. We soon
discovered she was a member of my college sorority. Thanks be to Lord for this kind and caring woman.
