Joyce B. Jones was born on December 27, 1942 in Brundidge, AL and entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
Joyce attended the public schools in Pike County Alabama until her family moved to Winter Haven, FL where she graduated from Jewett High School in 1960. While at Jewett she was elected the first Miss Homecoming. She furthered her education at Gibbs Junior College in Saint Petersburg, FL and then on to Florida A&M University ("FAMU") where she graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education in 1965. Education was important to Joyce. Although she was an accomplished educator, she chose to pursue and earn her Master of Science in Urban Education from William Patterson College in Wayne, NJ.
Joyce was an educator for the Newark Public Schools at Clinton Avenue Elementary School in
Newark, NJ for 38 years. She started out as a classroom teacher and went on to become a Teacher Coach. She mentored college students aspiring to become teachers and new teachers entering the profession. Because she was known to be a caring and devoted teacher, parents would often request to have their child assigned to Mrs. Jones' class because they knew she would nourish their dreams and aspirations.
Joyce accepted Christ at an early age. She was member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Winter Haven, FL until she moved to New Jersey upon graduation from FAMU. After moving to Roselle, she joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, served on the Scholarship Guild and was a faithful member until her health began to decline.
Joyce was united in holy matrimony to the late Alphonso Jones, Jr. on August 26, 1967, and they become the proud parents of their only son, Malcolm. Family was very important to Joyce. Whenever you talked to her it was very evident that her son and granddaughters were her pride and joy. Her home was always filled with laughter since it was the gathering place for holidays and summer cookouts where Joyce's cuisine was always the star. An invitation to the Jones' home meant you were in for a culinary experience beyond compare.
After retiring, Joyce continued to volunteer as a reading tutor. Joyce was very active in her community until her health began to decline. She served as President of Roselle Pop Warner for many years even after her son was no longer eligible to play. Her funding raising bus rides were legendary.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Alphonso Jones, Jr.; mother, Brunetta D. Brown; father, Thomas Cook, Sr.; bonus father, Rev. Herbert L. Brown; sister; Deeny Cook; brothers; Thomas Cook, Jr. and Carlton Cook.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted son Malcolm; grand-daughters: Bailey Jones, Bowie, MD; Phoenix Jones, Brooklyn, NY: sisters; Harriette Mitchem, Acworth, GA; Carla Brown, Winter Haven, FL: brothers; Alfred Cook (Francine), Montclair, NJ; Errol (Marcia) Brown, Winter Haven, FL; uncles: Franklin Cook (Kim), McComb Township, MI; Melza (Sheila) Cook, Stockbridge, GA; Vernon Cook, Buford, GA; aunt: Willa Doomes, Jessup, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
