Joyce Ione Peterson

Joyce Ione Peterson, age 97, of Shakopee, MN, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025, at St. Gertrude's Health Care Center in Shakopee.
Joyce was born in Wadena, MN, on May 14, 1928, the daughter of Henry and Carrie (Derby) Thorsen. She was raised on the family farm in Wadena, MN. Joyce met Wayne Peterson while attending St. Cloud State University, and they married on June 25, 1955. She worked as an elementary teacher for several years, and then stayed home to raise the kids. Wayne and she enjoyed traveling, and their trips to the cabin up north. Joyce loved fishing, and was always trying to catch the big one!
Preceded in death by husband, Wayne; parents, Henry and Carrie Thorsen; brothers, Dale Thorsen and Melvin Thorsen; brother-in-law, Marlyn Hennen. Survived by her children, David (Jerri), John (Cathrine), and Mary (Thomas) Balcom; grandchildren, David Smith, Timothy Smith, and Daniel Smith, Quinn (Bailey) Peterson, Cole Peterson, and Hannah (Nick) Johnson, Nathan (Amy) Balcom, Sarah (Alex) Urlogson, and Rachael (Michael) Peters; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Gabby Smith, Winnifred Peterson and Henry Johnson, Zoey and Rylee Balcom, and Freya Peters; sisters, Edna Hennen and Donna (Fred) Headstrom.
Visitation Wednesday, October 15, 2025, from 10-11 AM, followed by a Memorial Service at 11 AM, all at McNearney-Schmidt Funeral and Cremation, 1220 3rd Ave. East, Shakopee, MN. A private interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
