Joyce Bernice Sutphin

Joyce Bernice "Bunny" Sutphin, 74, of Troutville, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hawthorne and Ruth Falls of Nelson County; and a brother, Donald Falls of Waynesboro.

In 1960, she along with her husband, Gene, opened Gene's Trading Post, Cloverdale, as well as the first flee market in the state of Virginia. Bunny was a classic, southern lady, who reflected her tastes for the selections they offered and the affection she extended in all relationships.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, C.E. "Gene" Sutphin; a son, Pastor Dennis E. Sutphin and his wife, Elizabeth, of Las Vegas, Nevada; a stepdaughter, Brenda Shaw and her husband, Bill, of Troutville; a stepson, Joseph Sutphin and his wife, Fonda, of Greensboro, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Adam Sutphin and his wife, Vanessa, John Sutphin and his wife, Samantha, and Victoria Sutphin; three step grandchildren, Dustin, Brenda and Kelly Sutphin; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Rhonda Saunders and her husband, Larry, of Charlottesville and Betty Lou Campbell and her husband, Davis, of Waynesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Friday, September 10, 2010, at Oakey's North Chapel. The Reverend Earl Clemons will officiate. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.

I will always love and will forever miss Bunny, she was my Aunt and she was an amazing and very beautiful woman. There can never and will never be another person like her ever. She loved me and my children as if we were her own.. My prayers go out to the rest of her family and especially my Uncle Gene, may God show him what to do, with the loss of his Soul Mate.

Gene,Dennis,Tedford, and all the family I have not had the pleasure of meeting. My heartfelt prayers and condolences for and to you all. Strangely, there is not a day that I do not think of Bunny, even though I have not seen her in some years now. Each morning I open my back door to see two Norwegian Elkhounds romp to my side and Bunny comes immediately to mind.I rented one of the cottages at the trading post and already knew Dennis, Bunny, and Gene from hanging around the trading post in my teenage years with my girlfriend and her best friend who's family had a stall at the Flea Market. Bunny was the very picture of a gracious, kind, and generous southern lady. Rare and fine in her ways. It was my honor to know her.

Aunt Bernice was truly one of the most kind, loving women I have ever met. I am married to one of her nephews and from the start when we began to date, she welcomed me into the family. Over the years, she treated me ALWAYS with kindness and respect, always telling me when she seen me how very much she loved Ed and I and our two kids, Brandon and Brittanie. My thoughts go out to Uncle Gene, Dennis and the rest of the family. I am so grateful that I had her as part of my family. She will be truly be missed. Go in peace Aunt Bernice, you are no longer in any pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
