Joyce Elaine Townsend

Joyce Elaine Townsend, 94, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

She was born December 13, 1931, in Watertown Township, Michigan, the daughter of the late Ira and Elsie (Devitt) Erbe.

She married Jim Townsend on May 3, 1952, in Sandusky, Ml. They were married for 67 years before his passing on September 12, 2019.

Joyce went to Port Huron Beauty School and operated Joyce's Beauty Shop in Richmond for 66 years, which she loved. Joyce loved baking and won 2nd place in the state for her Cherry Pie when she was 17. She hunted, fished, bowled and played golf with her husband. In 1994 she got a hole-in-one. At age 60, she even bungee-jumped in Florida. Joyce and Jim won the Michigan 1963 Husband & Wife Trapshooting Championship. Joyce was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Richmond.

Above all, Joyce loved her children and was very proud of them. She is survived by her children, Sue (George) Millbrand, Pam (Vance) Green, Brenda Schweiger, Brent Townsend, Jay Townsend; eight grandchildren, Jason (Trish) Millbrand, Kelly (Mike) Hamburg, Kerri Green, Amanda (Adam) Mieksztyn, Brandon, Matthew, Hannah and Katie Townsend; seven great-grandchildren, Emma, Claire, Rylan, Avery, Aubrey, Adam (AJ) and Emily; sibling Larry Erbe; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Walker and Joan Erbe.

Joyce is predeceased by her parents, Ira and Elsie Erbe; brothers, Dale, Max and Gene Erbe; daughter-in-law, Karen Townsend and son-in-law, Roy Schweiger.

The family honors the memory of Joyce and invites you to visit and share memories Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond. Funeral services will be at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond on Monday with visitation starting at 10:00am and service at 11:00am.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Church of Christ, Richmond.
