Joyce Woods 81, of Campville, NY, passed away peacefully at home on April 29 after a long illness. Joyce was the first child in New York State to be cured of spinal-meningitis. Joyce was a graduate of Scotia Glenville High School. She then went to work as a head teller at the First National banks in Scotia and Colonie, New York. She worked at teller positions at those banks that were later used to stage movie robberies in the movie the Place Beyond the Pines. After she and David moved to Campville, she worked for the Instructional Support Services of Broome-Tioga BOCES, and later as the secretary for the Union-Endicott Personnel Director.
Her basketball team at the IBM Country Club came in first place. At the awards assembly, the participants got quite the laugh when accepting the award because over half the team was several months pregnant, including Joyce.
She taught children's Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and was treasurer at the Campville United Methodist Church. She switched her membership to the Central United Methodist Church in Endicott when the Campville Methodist Church left the United Methodist Church.
Joyce was very involved in her children's lives. She made her children's clothes when they were in elementary school. She served as Girl Scout leader, room mother and was on the PTA. She spent many hours teaching softball and baseball, supervising pool activities and playing card games with her children. She even served as dungeon master when playing Dungeons and Dragons with her children and their friends.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, her cats, and celebrating the holidays. In her final days, she enjoyed connecting with family through Facebook, playing games on her phone, watching the Food Channel's Children's Baking Championship and the Central United Methodist Church televised Sunday services.
Her life was rich and full as she watched her children and grandchildren grow and mature to become highly talented, successful and happy adults. She will be missed by all who came to know and interact with her. She will be remembered for her upbeat and generous personality.
She was predeceased by her parents Winifred (Peugh) and Howard Porter Sr; her brothers and their wives: Howard Porter Jr. and his wife Virginia (Gonyea) and Ronald Porter and his wife Diane (Parravani); and her son NYS Trooper Glen Woods. She is survived by her husband David Woods; daughter Debra Cramer and her son Alexander Cramer; son Stephen Woods and his wife Margie (Marbella) and their daughters Clara and Violet; and son Glen's wife Kelly (Coney) and their children Brenna and Josh.
Church services for Joyce will be held at the Central United Methodist Church at 17 Nanicoke Ave. in Endicott on Tuesday May 6. Pall bearers will need to be at the church at 9:00 AM. Viewing hours will then be from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow that at the Riverhurst Cemetery at 2500 East Main St. in Endicott.
