She was born on March 19, 1935 in Crystal Falls, Michigan to the late Clyde and Myrtle (Johnson) Payne. Joyce graduated from Crystal Falls High School, Class of 1953. She married Robert "Bob" Zavada on March 13, 1954 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Channing, Michigan.
She is survived by her sister, Lynne (David) Reiser; a sister-in-law, Pat Dishaw; nephews and nieces, Jerry Davison, Dennis James, Michael (Colleen) Heikkinen, David Heikkinen, Larry (Yvonne) Heikkinen, Gary (Victoria) Heikkinen, Harold (Dawn) Payne, Cheryl Bouche, Douglas (Susan) Payne, Ronnie (Amy) Payne, Jo Lynn Perry, Erin (Shannon) Reinke, Christine (Peg Ducommun) Forsman, Robert Forsman, Shirley (Randy) Beck, Sharon (Mark) Nickels, Mike (Tina) Dishaw, Pete Dishaw, Joe (Kim) Dishaw, Kathy (Gordon) Springberg, Lorraine (Peter) Halls, Larry (Debbie) Zavada, Lowell Zavada, and Lisa (Clark) Gravedoni. Joyce is also survived by numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; sons, James and John; in-laws, Rose and John Zavada; siblings and their spouses, Edward (Jo) Payne, Marvin Payne, Edna (Edward) Heikkinen, Emma Jean (Jack) Forsman, Janet (Eugene) James, Clyde Payne Jr., and Nancy Carol Payne; and brothers-in-law, Neil Dishaw and Ken Zavada.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at the Nash Funeral Home in Crystal Falls. The funeral mass will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 19 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Crystal Falls. Fr. Daniel Dapaah will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in the spring.
Joyce's family wishes to thank the staff at the Iron County Medical Care Facility for the wonderful care she received the past five months. Also, thank you to the staff at Aspirus Iron River Hospital for their kind, considerate care while she was a patient there.
