CANTON – Juanita Ann (Grant) Mitchell, 84, a longtime resident of Madrid, passed away Saturday morning, September 7, 2024 at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center following a stroke. Nita was born May 21, 1940 in Potsdam, to William Hartel and Margaret White and was later adopted by Lyle and Mabel (Waldroff) Grant. She was a graduate of Norwood-Norfolk School. On February 22, 1963, she married Kenneth Mitchell at the Church of The Nazarene in Potsdam. The marriage lasted 41 years. Nita owned and operated a farm in Madrid for many years. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, and crocheting.
She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Combs and husband Bennett of Mims, FL and Ronda Watson and husband, Alexander of Canton; her grandchildren, Raymond DeRonde, Keith Mitchell, Kaleb Mitchell, Dillon Perry, Rachel Perry, Anastazia Watson, Alexander Watson Jr., Desiree Ames, and Katrina Watson and her great-grandchildren, Zoe DeRonde, Leighanne Perry, Kari Ames, and Link Ames. Nita is also survived by her brothers, Bernard Grant, John Pope, Marvin Ward, and Michael Ward and her sisters Sylvia Gallegos, April Foster, Lynn Jacobs, Kerry Mitchell, and Mary Lee. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband and her sons, Lee and Kevin Mitchell. Private graveside services will be held in the Hale Cemetery. Memorial donations in Nita's memory can be made to Hale Cemetery Association, PO Box 62, Norwood NY 13668 and memories and condolences may be shared online at www.buckfuneralhome.com.
