It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Honorable Judge Michael J. Alaniz, a beloved father, son, brother, cousin, nephew, friend, and public servant. Judge Alaniz passed away on January 27, 2025, at the age of 59, leaving behind a lasting legacy of service and commitment to the Corpus Christi community.
Born on June 29, 1965, Michael was a lifelong resident of Corpus Christi. He attended Mary Carroll High School and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. Michael's pursuit of justice led him to the South Texas College of Law in Houston, where he earned his law degree, eventually returning home to practice law and serve the community that shaped him.
For over 20 years, Judge Alaniz served with honor as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Corpus Christi. His tenure on the bench was marked by fairness, integrity, and a commitment to treating all individuals with dignity and respect. He was also known for his tireless work ethic, admired for his calm demeanor and thoughtful rulings.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Alaniz, and his mother, Terri Alaniz. He is survived by his son, Alex, and Alex's mother, Sandra Eastwood; his sister, Rosalee Palacios; brother-in-law, Abel Palacios; and his nieces and nephews, Alyssa, Aleah, Adam, and Abel Palacios.
Michael was a lifelong loyal Dallas Cowboys supporter and a passionate college football fan. He also had an enduring love for rock 'n' roll, especially AC/DC, whose music shaped his youth and remained with him throughout his life. Michael enjoyed playing guitars, letting the electrifying sounds of rock echo his spirit in ways words never could.
Michael spent a lot of time studying life and relationship coaching, and he was passionate about sharing his insights with his son, Alex. His wisdom in life and relationships will continue to guide Alex and others for years to come.
As an organ donor, Michael's final act of generosity gave life to numerous others. In a moving display of gratitude and respect, an Honor Walk was held at Doctors Regional Hospital, where family, medical staff, and friends gathered to honor the extraordinary gifts he left behind. Michael's selflessness in life and death serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many.
In accordance with Michael's wishes, there will be no formal burial services. He will be laid to rest beside his mother and grandparents at the Galvan Family section at Rose Hill Memorial Park with a private ceremony to honor his memory.
