Judith Johnston Slothouber, 83 of Grinnell and formerly of Montezuma passed away Sunday evening, September 22, 2024 at Windsor Manor in Grinnell. A Celebration of Life will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, October 19, 2024 at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma. A luncheon/visitation will be held after the service in the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Research Foundation and may be sent to Holland-Coble Funeral Home; In Care of Judith Johnston Slothouber; P.O. Box 727; Montezuma, Iowa 50171. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.
Judith "Judie" Elizabeth Johnston Slothouber, the daughter of Erwin and Margaret "Bobbie" (Cox) Jordan, was born on November 10, 1940 in Montezuma. She graduated from Montezuma High School in 1959 and then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for two years. She was married to Howard Johnston on March 3, 1962. To this union three children were born, Terri, Doug and Sherri. Judie began working at Grinnell Reinsurance prior to helping on the farm and being a homemaker. She then worked at Beckley and Co. Abstract Firm in Montezuma before being elected Poweshiek County Clerk of Court. After serving a couple terms, Judie was then appointed to the Jasper County Clerk of Court where she worked a few years before adding Marion County to her duties retiring in 2007. During this time on July 1, 1994, Judie was united in marriage to Ken Slothouber and they made their home in Newton.
Judie was very talented in music and played the piano along with several other instruments. She also loved to sing, golfing with Ken, traveling, staying in Florida and she especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Judie was a member of the Montezuma Methodist Church and later the Newton Methodist Church where she served as Treasurer. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, DAR and National Honor Society in high school.
Judie is survived by her husband, Ken Slothouber of Grinnell; her children, Terri (Brad) Hier of Baxter, Doug (Mindy) Johnston of Montezuma, Sherri (Rick Caruthers) Johnston of Newton, Angie Wilderman of Panora, and Kurt (Kelli) Slothouber of Denver, Co., her grandchildren, Michael (Leslie) Billings, Lance (Abi) Johnston, Chantelle (Kody) Nielsen, Lex (Charyl Warden) Johnston, Spencer Johnston, Logan (Tiffany) Johnston, Arik Hier, Blake Hier, Brianna Wilderman, Jordan Rekemeyer, Hope Wilderman, Jordan Slothouber, and Taylor Slothouber; 12 great grandchildren; her sister, Jo Anne (David) Burke of Jacksonville, Ar., her sister-in-law, Jean Hoffman; and many other friends and relatives.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Kelly Wilderman; a great granddaughter, Makenna Warden; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Hoffman.
