Julia May Hughes, age 72 of Leonidas, passed away at Thurston Woods in Sturgis on February 28, 2025 following a brief illness. She was born on July 7, 1952 in Battle Creek the daughter of Samuel and Eddiess (Thomas) Hughes. She attended Colon High School and was part of the 1970 graduating class and was part of the National Honors Society. Following high school, she attended Glen Oaks Community College and Western Michigan. Julia was a very intelligent woman and had a photographic memory, which helped her as she assisted St. Joseph County as a social worker. She led a simple life; tending to her flower garden (especially the sun flowers) and making sure her animals were well taken care of; and there were many animals. Julia was a very caring person who always gave her time and efforts to others, all the while remaining humble about her own accomplishments.
Julia is survived by her two sisters; Helen Hughes and Pamela Hughes; very close friend; Lilah Blentlinger; and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; Samuel and Eddiess; and her siblings; Joyce, Thomas, and Edward.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation is being conducted. A private family ceremony will take place at a later date. Julia's family would like to express their gratitude to Thurston Woods Village and Centrica Care Hospice for their support and care during these past few months. Condolences and memories may be expressed to her family at eickhofffuneralhome.com

I had the great fortune of working alongside Julia at DSS. We were social workers in the time when that was an important function in society, when literally helping people was our most valuable function. She was a mentor, a brilliant woman, and a dear friend. She lived her life like the blessing she was. May she rest in peace.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I didn't know her well, but she always had a smile for me at our work.

I worked with Julia for many years at DSS/Social Services in Centreville. She was an amazing friend and social worker. She was a calming influence in the office. May she rest in peace.

I was fortunate enough to be Julia's supervisor when worked together at St. Joseph County DSS. Julia was one of the finest individuals I have ever known. She was truly a special person and I am terrible sadden at her passing.
