Julian "Hal" Halifax Mayo, Jr.

Julian "Hal" Halifax Mayo Jr., affectionately known as Hal, passed away on September 16, 2023, leaving behind a tremendous legacy. He was born on July 18, 1939, the beloved son of Julian Halifax Mayo Sr. and Sara Evelyn Ellis Mayo.

Preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 memorable years, Jan Connell Mayo. Their love was the cornerstone of their lives and brought immeasurable happiness to their family. Together, they weathered all of life's storms, supporting each other with love and unwavering devotion.

Hal leaves behind his children: Julian "Jay" H. (Nada) Mayo III, Lisa (Phillip) Donoho, and Joseph "Jody" Ellis Mayo. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Andrew Donoho, McKenna Donoho, and Carson Donoho, sisters Sally Mayo Spencer, Betty Moran, brother William "Fuzzy" Lee (Suzanne) Mayo, brother-in-laws James Brantley Connell, Charles Connell, sister-in-law Ann Rogers, beloved dogs Maggie, Abby and a host of extended family members and friends who held a special place in his heart.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School and later attended Vanderbilt University. Hal went on to proudly serve in the National Guard. His dedication to serving his country exemplified his strong sense of duty and patriotism.

Hal was a man of many talents and interests. He dedicated many years of his life working as a butcher, honing his skills, and providing for his family. His attention to detail and commitment to his craft made him highly respected among his peers in the industry.

However, it wasn't just his professional achievements that defined Hal's life; it was also his vibrant personality and sense of humor that touched the lives of those around him. Known for his quick wit and playful demeanor, he brightened any room with his contagious laughter and unforgettable jokes. Hal had a way of making even the most challenging times feel a little lighter.

 In addition to his love of humor, he also had a deep love for trains. From the age of three, he began collecting trains and developed an impressive knowledge of their inner workings. Whether it was fixing a broken part or building an entire train from scratch, Hal's skill and precision were unmatched. When he wasn't immersed in the world of trains, he enjoyed fishing and watching sports, especially Vanderbilt Sports. He also had a deep appreciation for history – particularly Nashville’s past. He enjoyed learning about the city's heritage and sharing fascinating stories with others.

Services will be held at Harpeth Hills Funeral Home in Nashville on September 30, 2023. Visitation will begin at 11:30am ~ 1:30pm with the Memorial Service following at 1:30pm.
