Julianne Lopes, age 84, of New Bedford, MA, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 3, 2025, after being lovingly cared for by her daughter Angela and granddaughters for several years. She was born to the late Henry B. Tavares and Bertha P. Tavares. She was the oldest of five siblings, Barbara M. Sullivan, Marion, Jean E. Rose, Rochester, Maryellen Gomes of Atlanta, GA. Her only brother Benjamin H. Tavares passed in May 2025. Julianne was married to her late husband, Richard Lopes. She leaves behind her children, Ronald Lopes and Angela Duarte, both of whom reside in New Bedford, MA. She was predeceased by her son, Richard Lopes Jr. (March 10,1994). Julianne leaves behind six grandchildren: Ronald Lopes, Jr., Renea Amos, Danielle Ashley Duarte, Brandi Duarte, Courtney Duarte, Damien Lopes and great-grandsons Taj Duarte and Joseph Stafford who lived with her. She is also survived by additional great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Julianne dedicated over 25 years of service to St. Luke's Hospital, where she worked in the Admissions Department. Deeply committed to her community, she was involved with the Martha Briggs Society and founded the Inner-City Youth Program, which provided education, training, and cultural empowerment for local youth. A woman of strong faith, Julianne attended the Church of the Nazarene for many years. Despite facing significant health challenges in recent years, she remained positive and steadfast, drawing strength from her faith and the support of her family. As reflected in Ephesians 3:15, Julianne's earthly family finds comfort in knowing she is welcomed by her heavenly family. Today, we honor her life and legacy as she is embraced by those who have gone before her. John 14:1-3 NKJV "Don't let your heart be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me. There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, I would have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am." Her memorial visitation will be held Sunday, August 10, 2025 from 2-4 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
