Julius Aaron Alston, known affectionately as "Jupebox" by those closest to him, was born on March 16, 1957, in Newport News, VA, to Ellis and Lizzie Mae Alston. He passed away on May 28, 2024, leaving a profound legacy of love, kindness, and service that will forever echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
The beloved fourth child of seven siblings, Julius found his faith at an early age, attending services with his family at Beulah Baptist Church in Washington, DC. It was there that he was baptized at eight years old. He continued to live a life of deep faith, later joining The New Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher, enriching the lives of others through his faith.
Julius's early education began at Catharine Watkins Elementary School, continuing through to his graduation from Western High School. His journey of service led him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force in June of 1979, where he proudly served as a Ground Radio Operator until his honorable discharge in February of 1982. He was a living testament to the words of Scripture, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7).
After his military service, Julius pursued higher education at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), which paved the way for a commendable 40-year career as a Respiratory Therapist. With a compassionate heart, he dedicated his life to serving others in his community and in his profession. His commitment to healthcare was evident in the countless lives he touched throughout his career, bringing hope and comfort to patients with his remarkably thoughtful presence. He worked at various hospitals, making significant contributions to the field. It was at the Washington VA Medical Center where he met Tracy Davis. The couple married in 1991, and though their relationship was not permanent, their loving union was blessed with a daughter, Martina "Tina" Alston.
Outside of his professional life, Julius was a man of many passions. He was a spirited basketball and football lover, a die-hard Washington Commanders (Redskins) fan, an avid moviegoer, and a Star Trek enthusiast. His hobbies also included Taekwondo, boxing, and running. As an active member of the Capitol Hill Reunion Committee, his efforts in community service fostered lifelong bonds and cherished memories. His generosity knew no bounds, especially evident in his devotion to his family and friends.
Julius was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Lizzie Mae Alston, his brother Ronnie Alston, and his niece Shannon Turner.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Martina Alston; two sisters, Linda Turner and Patricia Alston; three brothers, Ellis C. Jr. (Sherry), Richard Wayne, and Michael Alston; six nieces, Timekia Alston, Megen Goode, Lanika Jones (Herman), Charmane Alston, Aaris Grant (Isadore), and Morgan Alston; two nephews, Demond Alston (Abena) and Jason Turner; and a host of other loving family and friends.
