June Nantz, a beloved retired school teacher who dedicated over 50 years to shaping young minds within the Leslie County School System, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at her residence in Hyden, Kentucky. She was 84 years old. Born on June 7, 1941, in Leslie County, she was a cherished figure in her community and a source of inspiration for countless students.
Throughout her distinguished career, June exemplified a commitment to education that went beyond the classroom; her passion for teaching and nurturing children left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to learn from her. Even after her retirement, June remained deeply engaged with her family and community, consistently demonstrating her belief in lifelong learning and connection.
June's life was enriched by her love for her family. She is survived by her son, Floyd Dean Shannon Begley, and her sisters, Helen Couch (Jr. Ray) and Alice Lee Smith (Claude). She was a proud grandmother to Stephen Marcum, Sicily Stevena Rayne Begley, Sophie Begley and River Begley and treasured moments spent watching her granddaughter Sicily cheer and play softball, spending time with Stephen, Sophie and River and enjoying cookouts surrounded by family. June's warmth and affection extended to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends who will carry her memory forward.
While her presence will be sadly missed, June leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and the joy of family. She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Marcum, mother, Della Collins Sizemore, her maternal grandparents, Floyd and Mallie Bowling Collins, and her brother, Robert "Big Foot" Sizemore. June Nantz will forever be remembered for her unwavering spirit and the countless lives she influenced through her teaching and her loving family bonds.
Funeral: Friday, February 27, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at the Richard M. Nixon Center in Hyden, KY.
Ministers: Andrew B. Farmer, Jerry Holland, Jerry McKinley Holland & Ryan Osborne
Interment: Frelin Branch Cemetery, Hyden, KY.
Visitation: Thursday, February February 26, 2026 at 6:00 P.M.at the Hal's Fork Pentecostal Church at Bear Branch, KY.
