Kai Everett Shoemaker (formerly Brooke Allison Shoemaker), 38, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at his residence in Staunton.
Kai was born on August 4, 1987, in Staunton, to Billy Ralston, Jr. and Mary Ann Shinpaugh Shoemaker.
Kai devoted his life to uplifting those around him with his gentle spirit and profound kindness.
A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, he went on to further his education, earning an associate's degree from Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave.
Kai was an avid animal lover, particularly fond of cats and was known for taking frequent walks through his neighborhood, where animals would naturally gravitate towards him. His big heart, love, and attention often translated into taking in stray cats and providing them with a caring and compassionate home.
Creativity flowed through Kai, who displayed exceptional talent in drawing, coloring, and music. He had a genuine passion for playing various musical instruments and his skills in the kitchen were equally impressive; he delighted in baking and had a knack for cooking a wide array of delicious meals.
Above all else, Kai will be remembered for his kindness, caring nature, and gentle demeanor. He touched the lives of many and will be profoundly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his beloved son Julian Reese Shoemaker; his sister, Caitlin Marie Shoemaker; his aunts and uncles, Connie Schroeder and her husband, James, Carla Jean Nicholson and her husband, Sam, Laura Argenbright and her husband, Jerry, and Susan Sutton; along with numerous cousins.
A memorial service to honor Kai's life will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Central United Methodist Church in Staunton with the Reverend Won Un officiating.
