Kamdyn Melson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DeLozier Funeral Service on Sep. 28, 2024.
Services to celebrate and remember the life of Kamdyn Ward Melson will be 6:00 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the Chelsea High School gym. Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 3-7 with family there to receive visitors from 5-7. Kamdyn passed away in Tulsa, on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, two days after his 20th birthday.
Born in Claremore, OK on September 23, 2004. Kamdyn was raised and educated in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School with the class of 2022. Despite his many challenges he was a member of the National Honor Society. Many of his fellow classmates and teachers will always remember Kamdyn coming down the halls at a very high rate of speed in his wheelchair, hoping not to get run over. Now that memory will put a smile on their faces when they think of Kamdyn. He continued his education at RSU in Claremore where he was a junior working on his bachelor's degree making the honor roll. Graduating high school and attending college were huge milestones in Kamdyn's life as he battled a disease called Duchenne, which is a form of muscular dystrophy. Referred to by his mother as the strongest person she ever knew; Kamdyn did life his way. He lived it to the fullest, touched countless lives along the way, and became a mentor of other kids with the same disease.
A young man that had a lot of interests and hobbies. Kamdyn was highly intelligent and loved to study history. In fact, when he was in high school, he won the Battle of the Brains contest in history. His knowledge in a host of subjects was virtually encyclopedic. Referred to by his family as a "grumpy old man". Kamdyn had a very dry sense of humor, and he was brutally honest with people. In fact, in some cases to the point of embarrassing his family. On the flip side of that he was very loving and had a heart of gold. Kamdyn looked forward to the yearly MDA camp in Hinton, OK. It was there, that for a week, he got to do all the things his friends did at camp. Kamdyn participated in every activity, but especially the talent show. Kamdyn loved to take center stage and roast his fellow campers. Kamdyn liked dogs and his two favorites, Stella and Bumble, brought him countless hours of companionship and fun.
Throughout his life Kamdyn made many friends and built lasting relationships. But there was one relationship that outshined all the others and that was with his mom. From birth Kamdyn was his mother's baby boy. They knew each other better than they knew anyone else. Casey devoted her whole life to her son's care. She helped build that strong sense of independence by allowing Kamdyn to walk to and from school, (Little did he know she was in the car following him). As with any child, sometimes discipline is necessary, and Kamdyn was no exception. It was just his response to his mother that was classic. Kamdyn would simply tell her don't talk to me like I'm stupid, my IQ is higher than yours.
Although Kamdyn's life was brief, he has left a huge footprint and legacy that will live on in the lives of his family and many friends. Kamdyn is survived by his mother, Casey Melson and husband Ryan Lyon, grandparents, Linda Blackwell (Grandma) and husband Jerry (Pepaw), Roger Melson (Pawpaw), Darlene Kerns, Tim Lyon and wife Lisa, uncles, Brian Melson, Patrick Melson and wife Jessica, Mike Lyon and wife Joni, aunt, Emily Dickinson and husband Jason, numerous cousins and extended family, and his non-biological family that loved him just as much as his real family. Kamdyn was preceded in death by his great grandmother, Mary Williams.
