IN MEMORY OF KAREN BRUSTMAN
"There are some that bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains."
Karen Brustman, beloved and devoted mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan at age 70.
Born in Niagara Falls, New York on March 19, 1955, she was a shining light to all who knew her, known for her unwavering love, kindness, strength, and faith. A graduate of Boston College with a degree in Pastoral Ministry and Religious Education, Karen dedicated her time to making the world a better place. Karen lived life to the fullest through her faith and spirituality by teaching and guiding others in their journey. She was compassionate, funny, and was always putting others first. Karen was a pillar of strength in her family, always there to listen, comfort, and embrace. As a devout Catholic, she befriended many nuns that were her second family.
Living near the rain forests of Belize in her 40s, Karen Brustman was on a mission to share her faith and help impoverished children. In her 60s, she went on another mission to encourage people in war-torn Ukraine. But during those in-between years, her mission was personal – saving herself from the ravages of persistent uterine (endometrial) cancer. Treated by "compassionate and thinking" doctors at Henry Ford Hospital, Karen worked to educate women about this serious condition.
Karen had a passion for writing and published; "The Angora Rabbit" (The Unfolding of Ignatian Spirituality for Young & Old). She loved to draw in her sketchbook. She also had a love for all plants, creating her own indoor and outdoor gardens. Karen was a adamant Detroit Lions and Tigers fan.
Karen was predeceased by her father Wilford Jr. and a nephew. Karen is survived by her mother Jane, brother Bryan, and sister Bonnie. Also, Karen is survived by her two daughters: Karen's oldest daughter Elisha with her husband Hicham and their children Amir, Saleem, and Sofia and Karen's younger daughter Olivia with her husband Joseph and their daughter Ella. She also leaves behind a niece, a nephew, and many people from her extended family, church, and community who have been touched by her giving nature.
Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. John 14:1-3

Dear family of Karen. I am so sad to learn of Karen's death. She was such a good friend of mine during the years we studied together at Boston College. We had a mutual love for Ignatian spirituality and loved going on retreats together. She was so giving. My room is filled with gifts she gave me, especially things she brought back from Belize. I am sorry we lost touch over years but her memory will live on in my heart. May she rest in eternal peace.
