Katharine L. Thompson (Lancaster) ObituaryKatharine L. Thompson, of Litchfield, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, at her home, with her faithful dog, Colt, by her side.
Born on October 29, 1945, in Litchfield, Connecticut, Katharine was the daughter of John and Carol Lancaster. She grew up in Litchfield, developing a deep love for nature, learning, and adventure. It was at Lenox Hill Camp, where she worked as a counselor, that she met the love of her life, Walter Thompson. Their bond grew into a lifelong partnership filled with love, family, and shared passions.
After graduating from Wheelock College, Katharine became a dedicated educator, shaping young minds as a kindergarten teacher in Michigan. Following her marriage to Walter, she continued teaching in the Coventry, Canton, and East Hartford public schools. Eventually, they made their way back to Litchfield when Walter became the director of Lenox Hill Camp. Kathy taught preschool at Little Brick School, where she met Cheryl Mason. Together, they opened the successful children's clothing store, Puddle Jumpers.
In 1991, Kathy and Walt moved to Central Wisconsin, where she built a successful career as a realtor and formed several lifelong friendships. When they retired in 2011, they returned to Litchfield where she immersed herself in the community. She was active in several community groups, including the Women's Forum where she served as president.
Katharine found joy in the simple and beautiful things in life. She had a passion for gardening, photography, and visiting Cape Cod. Her warmth, kindness, and ability to make friends wherever she went left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Thompson; her children, Elizabeth Thompson and Benjamin Thompson; her cherished grandchildren, Lucy and Kaily McGurk and Kieran Thompson; her sister, Nancy Landry; her son-in-law, James McGurk; her daughter-in-law, Mary Erin Clem; and countless friends.
A celebration of her life will take place at 1:00pm on May 24 at Camp Washington in Morris, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Camp Washington in Morris CT or the Northwest CT Community Foundation.
