Our beloved Mother, Kathleen P. Houston (née Carolan), passed away peacefully on Monday, October 21st, 2024. Kathleen Patricia was born to Bridget and George Carolan on January 18th, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY. The third of five children, she attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grammar School and Bay Ridge High School.
Kathleen married the love of her life William (Bill) Houston on May 3rd, 1958. Together they raised their five children, first in Valley Stream, NY and then East Windsor, NJ where they resided for 35 years. They retired to Florence, NJ before Kathleen moved to Shrewsbury.
Kathleen was a devoted mother who provided endless love and her undivided attention to her children. A devout Catholic, she also shared her deep faith and unwavering trust in God with her family. Kathleen was renowned for hosting wonderful celebrations for family and friends at her home in East Windsor, and was sure to never miss a holiday at Gram and Pop's in Brooklyn. Her summers were spent "at the beach" on Gravelly Point Road in Highlands, the highlight of which was when her children and later grandchildren gathered together for the famous Bungalow Day. Kathleen also took great pride in her Irish Heritage and enjoyed several visits to her parents' birthplace in the "wee" County Louth.
Kathleen was predeceased by her parents George and Bridget (née McLoughlin), her husband Bill, her brothers Jack and George, her sister Veronica Cusick, sister-in-law Catherine Melley, brothers-in-law Edward Wasenius and Bill Clark, father-in-law William Houston and mother-in-law Catherine Houston (née Reardon). She is survived by her five children, ten grandchildren and her great grandson James: Bill and Kathleen Houston of Haddon Heights and their children Bill (Kate) and Mary (Jimmy); Kathleen and Michael Chandler of Navesink; Eileen and Timothy Feeney of Hainesport and their children Bridget, Katie (Chris) and Erin; Paul and Laura Houston of Lincroft and their children Lily and Samuel; John and Maire Houston of Mahwah and their children Maeve, Jack, and Emma.
Kathleen is also dearly remembered by her beloved sister Maura Wasenius Clark, sisters-in-law Colleen Carolan and Dolores Carolan, brother-in-law Stephen Melley, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
Kathleen will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. We will cherish the memories of her warm smile, beautiful blue eyes, quick wit and unconditional love and take comfort in knowing she is reunited with her husband Bill and family in heaven.
Visitation will be held Sunday, October 27th, 2024, 2:00pm - 6:00pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown, NJ 07748.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 28th, 2024 at 11:00am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 141 Navesink Avenue, Highlands, NJ 07732. To access a live stream of the Mass visit: https://www.njstreaming.com/houston
