Kathleen Alice Messerschmidt, known affectionately as Kathy, passed away on May 28, 2023, at the age of 73 in
Norfolk, Virginia. She was born on September 13, 1949 to her parents Edward G. Pixley and Julia F. Pixley in
Provo, Utah, and spent her life devoted to her family, faith, and community.
Kathy was a woman of great kindness and warmth, and her unwavering devotion to her loved ones was a testament to the values of faith, family, and service that she held dear. She will always be remembered for her selflessness, generosity, and commitment to her faith, which she embodied in all aspects of her life.
Kathy is survived by her son, Jeremy (Rachel) Sykes and their children Denyse Suits, Nathan, and Riley; daughter, Rebecca (David) Umstot and their children Gabrielle, Isla, and Jeremiah; daughter, Frances Sykes and her children Isabella, and Bayleigh, and grandson Nicholas Griffin (son of Melinda Sykes); sister, Diane (Glenn) Martinez and sister Susan Murdoch.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Orville W. Sykes and Norman W. Messerschmidt, daughter, Melinda S. Sykes, and a brother Dan Pixley.
Kathy spent her career as an X-ray Technician with Burke Orthopedics, where she helped many patients with her kind and compassionate care. Her greatest joy, however, was found in spending time with her family and playing with her grandchildren, whom she cherished deeply.
Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service in Kathy's honor on Saturday, June 10th, 2023, at 1 pm at the Wallace and Wallace funeral home Rainelle Chapel, located at 283 Main St., Rainelle, WV 25962 with Rev. Von Sadler officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 until time of service. A graveside service will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery located at 16155 Midland Trail West Crawley WV 24931.
Kathy's life was a testament to the values of love, faith, and service, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May we honor her memory by living our lives with the same unwavering devotion to faith, family, and community that she embodied throughout her life.
