Obituary of Kathleen Mary Skow
Kathleen Mary (Giever) Skow, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 23, 2023, on the family Cove Creek Ranch in Weiser, Idaho. She was the eldest of six children born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 4,1951 to Dr. Richard and Mary Margaret Giever, while her father was attending Creigton University School of Medicine.
If home is where the heart is, Kathy's heart was truly in Weiser, Idaho. Her early childhood was spent in Nebraksa, Wyoming, New Mexico and finally Idaho – with many summer family vacations at Wallowa Lake in Oregon. She was one who was universally loved, who loved everyone, and who poured her spirit, time, and energy into others - she was truly larger than life.
Arriving in Weiser as a sophomore, Kathy initially attended high school at the old institute before moving into the newly built high school as a senior in the Class of 1969. It didn't take Kathy long to get involved in sports, drill team, church youth group, clubs, and leadership roles. In fact, she was a state champion in the girls doubles in tennis her senior year.
After high school, Kathy attended Boise College and was an active member of the Boise College drill team where she performed for the NFL 49ers during half time.
On August 14, 1970, Kathy married her high school sweetheart, Pete Skow, and embraced the ranching life. In 1971, Kathy and Pete became the fifth generation Skow family to run Cove Creek Ranch. All three of their children, Morgan, Travis, and Laraine, were born in Weiser and raised on the ranch. In 2007, the Skows (and Cove Creek Ranch) were one of the first Idaho families to be honored as the "Farm Family Today" at the Western Idaho State Fair. She loved living on the ranch and the close-knit family of which she was blessed to be a part.
Giving back to her community was second nature to Kathy's generous heart. Her keen intellect and witty sense of humor were a blessing to those with whom she interacted. Whether it was serving at St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Shamrock Club, or supporting her children's endeavors, Kathy was "All In." Kathy was blessed with a charitable and giving nature which lifted the lives of many, many people. Never one to seek the limelight, Kathy possessed extraordinary gifts for a can-do spirit and pragmatism. She was a natural, though sometimes reluctant, leader and an awesome cook.
Professionally, Kathy worked at the Washington County Juvenile Probation office for nearly two decades and also at the Weiser School District as a substitute teacher coordinator for the past 13 years. She was a member of the Idaho Cattle Association, PEO, Shamrock Club, St. Agnes Catholic Women's League, St. Agnes Pastoral Council, and the local 4-H program for many years. Even though she was involved in many organizations and community service projects, supporting her family and especially her grandchildren was by far her favorite pastime. She would move mountains to be able to support and cheer them on in their endeavors.
Kathy is preceded in death by her husband, Pete, her parents, Dr. Richard and Mary Margaret Giever, and her nephew, Joe Dickerson.
Kathy is survived by her sons Morgan (Rebecca) and Travis (Frank), daughter Laraine (Tom Harrison), granddaughters, Grace Skow, Reagan Skow, Kenni Harrison, and Hannah Cramer and grandsons, Toren Skow, Kameron Skow (Emma), Caden Cramer, Kolin and Klete Cook, Kolt and Krew Harrison. Also surviving are her five siblings, Dr. Rick Giever (Kate), Kris Moser (Lynn), Kyla Dickerson (Doug), Paul Giever (Betsy), Karen Mahoney (Ed) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Rosary service will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 214 East Liberty in Weiser, Idaho on February 14 at 7:00 pm with visitation following. A funeral mass for Kathy will be held on Wedesday, February 15, at St. Agnes Catholic Church at 11 am with a luncheon immediately following at the Weiser Vendome Events Center, 309 State Street.
The family would especially like to thank the community of Weiser and all who have reached out to help, offer condolences, say prayers, and extend a kind word. It means the world!
In honor and memory of Kathy Skow, the family suggests gifts to the Pete and Kathy Skow Memorial for the women's basketball program at Weiser High School or a charity of your choice.
