It is with heartfelt sadness that today I share the passing of my best friend and sister, Kathryn Diane Campbell LCDR, USN, Retired 71, of Pensacola, Florida.
Kathy was a private, strong, passionate, dedicated woman who set her sights on a goal and attained it. Kathy started her career right after graduating from Northwest High School in 1971 working for the local newspaper, The Leaf Chronicle, attended college at Austin Peay University and The University of Tennessee at Martin. From there, Kathy joined the US Navy where she traveled the world. Kathy started out in Boot Camp in Orlando, Florida, May 8, 1975 as a YN3 and from there traveled to Washington, DC, New London, CT, Naples, Italy, to the USS Proteus, COMSUBGRU 7, Keflavik, Iceland, back to BUPERS Washington, DC, and finally to COMTRAWING6 in Pensacola, FL where she retired on January 04, 1998.
Along the way, Kathy picked up a host of awards and medals including the: Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Four Stars, Navy Achievement Medal with one gold star, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Battle "E" Ribbon, 2 Good Conduct awards (period ending May 09, 1983), National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Overseas Service Ribbon with four Bronze Stars.
In 1987, Kathy was selected as one of the OUTSTANDING YOUNG WOMEN OF AMERICA due to her awards and accomplishments. Kathy was a hard working, dedicated woman that never took NO for an answer; she started out as enlisted YN3, picked up Warrant Officer and then went to LDO. She was on the Navy bowling team and loved everything about her career.
In her spare time, Kathy enjoyed gardening, bingo, bowling, scrap booking, counted cross stitch, and loved the beach. Kathy's true loves were her cats.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn Ida McConnell Campbell; father, James Ellis Campbell; and brother, James David Campbell.
Kathy is survived by brother, Donald Bruce (Julie) Campbell; sisters, Janet E. Campbell, Barbara L. (Dusty) Fields, Carolyn R. Meredith, and Sara J. Griffin; a host of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 01, 2025 at 11:30 AM with Father Chris Winkeljohn and Father Eugene Casserly officiating.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
