Kathryn Halteman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anders-Detweiler Funeral Home & Crematory - Souderton on Mar. 10, 2026.
Kathryn "Kass" A. (Moyer) Halteman, 93, of Souderton, Pennsylvania; formerly of Franconia Township, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 9, 2026, at Souderton Mennonite Homes.

She was the beloved wife of the late Russell L. Halteman, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage. Born in Telford, Pennsylvania, Kathryn was the daughter of the late Franklin L. Moyer and the late Bertha K. (Alderfer) Moyer.

In her youth, Kathryn surrendered her life to Jesus and was baptized, becoming a member of Plains Mennonite Church in Lansdale. She graduated from Hatfield School in the Class of 1950 where she received 12 years of education. In June of 1952, Kathryn, at age 19, and Russell were married by bishop John E. Lapp. They were the first couple to be married at the Plains Meetinghouse, instead of at the minister's home. The following year, the couple moved to the farm at 324 Allentown Rd, becoming co-owners and operators with Russell's brother Lester and his wife, Millie. Here they would reside for 66 years, cultivating the land, raising their family and serving the Lord. Upon moving to the farm they became faithful, life-time members of Franconia Mennonite Church, with Kathryn participating in the ladies' sewing circle. In 2019, they took up residence at the Souderton Mennonite Homes, enjoying new friendships and community.

Kathryn was a devoted wife and mother. With love, generosity and simplicity she supported her husband and raised their children. Using service, humility, kindness, and caring she loved and cared for her family and friends. She was a gifted cook and baker. Nearly every Sunday, for over forty years, she prepared a hot, Pennsylvania Dutch dinner for the family. With a gentle spirit she created a space of peace and refuge. She passes on her values of loving God, simplicity, kindness and frugality to her descendants.

Throughout her life, she held a variety of jobs. First working as a seamstress at the former Sun-Lite Shop in Souderton, then as a clerk at the former Hatfield National Bank, and later in life as a factory worker for the former Shelly Brothers Candy Company in Franconia Township. Kathryn also worked part-time as a commercial cleaner with Wireman Cleaning Service in the local area. In retirement she volunteered for many years at the Care & Share Thrift Shoppes in Souderton and sewed many bags for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) school kits. She also volunteered at Souderton Mennonite Homes by knotting comforters for MCC.

Her hobbies included crocheting, sewing, and reading Christian historical fiction. She found inspiration in memorizing scripture and singing hymns. She and her husband enjoyed bus trips and cherished their annual family day trips to Ocean City, New Jersey, and Sandy Cove Ministries in North East, Maryland. She also enjoyed listening to the Mennonite Hour quartet, the Gaither Vocal Band and Lawrence Welk.

She is survived by her two daughters, Donna L. Derstine & husband, Henry of Harleysville, PA, and Karen S. Halteman of Brooklyn, NY; her daughter-in-law, Joanne G. Halteman of Lederach, PA; her four grandchildren, Henner Derstine & wife, Sokun, Jacob Derstine & wife, Mandy, Greg Halteman & wife, Christi, and Galen Halteman & wife, Julie; and her ten great-grandchildren, Jacob, Selena, Timothy, Thalia, Elias, Adelyn, Raelee, Hudson, Wesley, and Charissa. She is also survived by her sister, Naomi Krall of Harrisonburg, VA.

In addition to her parents and husband, Kathryn was preceded in death by her son, Gary D. Halteman; her nine siblings, Edna Kratz & husband, Harvey; Marvin Moyer & wife, Marietta; Amanda Kratz & husband, Jonas; Abraham Moyer & wives, Mae & Dorothy; Franklin Moyer & wife, Sara; Jacob Moyer & wife, Mildred; Wilmer Moyer; Ruth Marczuk & husband, John; and her brother-in-law, John Krall.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Anders-Detweiler Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 E. Broad St., Souderton, PA 18964, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. The service will be livestreamed.

Interment will take place at Franconia Mennonite Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Living Branches Foundation, Souderton Mennonite Agape Fund, 275 Dock Drive, Lansdale, PA 19446.
