I sat next to her at an NESCBWI Conference in 2016. When her debut picture book came out, I interviewed her on the #kidlit blog, Writers' Rumpus: https://writersrumpus.com/2017/07/11/meet-debut-kidlit-author-katey-howes/ I remember her warmth and smile and what a special human she was. This past October we were at the Warwick Children's Book Festival together and shared hugs and took a photo of us wearing the same book earrings given to us by Annie Lynn. My deepest sympathies to all her loved ones.

After admiring Katey's work and encouraging presence in the kidlit industry, I had to meet her in person when she came near my town. It was the beginning of a 7 year friendship - one of the most meaningful in my author journey. Without fully realizing it, I charted my plans and dreams after hers. And although she treated me as a peer, she was actually a mentor. Katey provided an incredible example of what is possible if you believe deeply in your stories, work on your craft purposefully, and embrace the people and opportunities you encounter along the way. As a critique partner, generous friend, and ever-wise soul, Katey is a star whose light will endure for the rest of our days. I will forever cherish the gift of her life and friendship, and send my heartfelt sympathies to her family - she spoke of you with endless love.

I knew Katey through our debut author group. I could always count on her for support, enthusiasm, and kindness. Living a bit further away, it was so lovely to finally catch up with her in person in 2019 at Nerd Camp Long Island. Katey shared her joy and love of life in thousands of little arrows that carry forward through all of us. What a gift and what a loss. My heart goes out to her beautiful family and close friends.

I never met Katey in person but as an aspiring children's book author her presence in my life through social media exchanges and the way she shared her work and the work of others will have a huge impact on my pursuit within the kidlit community. Katey certainly celebrated her books which was infectious but she also championed others. She always had a kind response or supportive post to share. While I would have loved meeting Katey in person, I am so grateful to have 'known' her through the vibrant kidlit community. She had a tremendous impact in other writers' lives and she will be greatly missed and always remembered.

I loved working with Katey on The Reindeer Remainders! I will miss communicating with her, as she was so thoughtful, collaborative, brilliant, and kind. She was a creative brainstormer who always came up with ingenious solutions. Her work for children is highly unique and relevant; it will remain a gift for many years to come. She will be so missed! Sourcebooks is proud to be Katey's publisher.
