Kathryn Matick Obituary
Kathryn Lee Murdick was born July 11, 1940 in Benton Harbor, Michigan to Helen and Pete Murdick (Perry Harvey Murdick, Jr). Katie spent her earliest years up until high school in Grand Haven along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. Hers was an idyllic childhood, chasing after her beloved big brother Tad, riding bikes to "The Oval" and picnics at the beach. Her father's job as head of the Chamber of Commerce took him and their family from Grand Haven to Gaylord, Michigan, where she finished high school, waited tables at Otsego Ski Club and made great friends.
Katie attended Albion College where she earned her degree in teaching/education, graduating in 1962. After graduation Katie moved to "the big city"of Birmingham, Michigan to teach second grade at Pembroke Elementary. A teacher friend introduced her to George Matick on a blind date and they married three years later. Katie's greatest love and most serious work was in the care and nurturing of her family and home. Katie and George raised three daughters: Sarah Zimmermann (Karl), Susie Baranowski (Tom) and Elizabeth Storrie (Scot). Watching them grow and create their own families was one of her great joys. Her heart overflowed with love for her grandchildren: Max Zimmermann (24), Anna Zimmermann (21), George Baranowski (17), William Storrie (16), and Samson Storrie (13). She was fondly called "Nonnie" by all.
Katie and George enjoyed their friendships and traveling the world and seeing the USA with Chevrolet and the Detroit Chevy Dealers. They enjoyed great times with dear friends and their families at Orchard Lake Country Club, and later spent years visiting vacation homes in Harbor Town, Hilton Head, South Carolina and Birchwood Farms, Harbor Springs, Michigan, where they hosted friends and families, enjoying boating, golf and beautiful country.
Katie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for her entire life. She has called First United Methodist Church Birmingham home for 62 years, and home it truly was. It anchored her earliest days in "the big city" when she arrived. It's where she baptized, taught and married her daughters. It's where she volunteered, did Bible study and traveled with its members to the Holy Land. Finally, it is where she will be put to rest. Hers was a life built on faith.
