Kathryn A. "Kat" Salmon, born on January 26, 1953, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Gerry (Richter) Harbeck, was a vibrant soul who touched the lives of many until her passing on June 19, 2025, at a local hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Kat's journey through life was one filled with warmth, compassion, and a deep love for those around her.
A Memorial Service celebrating Kat's extraordinary life will take place at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, IA, where family and friends will gather to honor her enduring spirit. Visitation with the family will begin at 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Kat's early years were marked by her education at Bishop Heelan, which laid the foundation for her future endeavors. Following her studies, she traveled a bit before settling in Arkansas, eventually making her way back to Sioux City. It was there that she met the love of her life, Eugene Salmon, and they married on August 1, 1981, in rural Union County, South Dakota. Together, they created a beautiful life, marked by shared laughter and cherished memories.
Professionally, Kat dedicated herself to the field of veterinary medicine, serving with utmost devotion as the Clinic Manager at Roach Animal Hospital for 25 years and after retiring, Kat worked at the Dunes Veterinary Clinic as a receptionist. Her commitment to her work reflected her love for animals, especially horses, a passion that was evident in her life. Kat frequently fostered dogs for the Yellow Dog Auction in Sioux City, a testament to her generous heart.
Beyond her career, Kat found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a fervent love for reading and relished the challenge of puzzles. Game shows, particularly Family Feud with Steve Harvey, brought her delight, while bowling, cards, and bocce ball served as cherished pastimes with friends and family. Above all, Kat adored her grandchildren, whom she embraced with a love that knew no bounds.
Kat is survived by her devoted sons, Michael Salmon of Des Moines, IA, and Anthony "Tony" Salmon of Sioux City; grandchildren: Brady Salmon, Charlie Swearengin, Kelani Salmon, Kyson Salmon, and Maisey Salmon; son-in-law Joe Hollinger of Sioux City; and former daughter-in-law Allison Salmon of Sioux City. She is also survived by her brothers, Dan (Alana) Harbeck of Idaho Springs, CO, and Brad (Kim) Harbeck of Chandler, AZ; as well as her sister-in-law, Jo Harbeck of Sioux City.
Kat was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Donald and Gerry (Richter) Harbeck, her husband Eugene Salmon on November 6, 2023, and her daughter Paula Gene Hollinger.
Kat leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication - a bright light that will continue to shine in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
