Lora L. Wessling, 89 of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa died on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Mercy One Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
A Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Church located at 4241 Natalia Way Sioux City, Iowa 51106. with Father Peter Duc Hung Nguyen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA.
Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Church, 4241 Natalia Way, Sioux City, Iowa.

Lora was born July 20, 1936, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Harvey and Anna Mary (Mack) Grass. She grew up there and graduated from Mapleton High School with the class of 1954. Lora married James L. Wessling June 21, 1955. The couple had three kids Debra, Dennis, and David. They lived in Charles City, Browns Lake, Spencer and Fremont, NE before moving to Sergeant Bluff in 1971. She was employed by the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Department as a secretary in the records division for 23.5 years, retiring in 1999. She was named Law Enforcement Employee of the year for both Optimist Club and Exchange Club in 1988, 1991 and 1996, and received the John Herman Award of Excellence from the Sheriff’s Department in 1997.
Her hobbies included bowling, golf, crossword puzzles, and being a huge sports fan of football, basketball and especially Nascar. Keeping up with her kids and grandchildren’s sporting events was a Godsend to her. She was a member of the Sergeant Bluff Luton Booster club while her kids were growing up.
She was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Church of the Mater Dei Parish, the Nativity Ladies Guild and volunteered to help with funeral lunches.
Surviving are daughter, Debra (Douglas) Swanson, son, Dennis (Teresa) Wessling, daughter in-law Peggy Wessling, grandchildren: Jeremy Swanson, Troy (Felipe) Swanson, Stacia (Kris) Swanson, Trista (Jason) Linton, Kimberly (Toby) Twait, David (Valerie) Wessling, Abby (John) O'Regan, Shawna (Jesse) Taylor, Nicole (Mike) Riggs, Elizabeth (Nick) Harvey, great grandchildren, Jacey Swanson, Joel Swanson, Eavan Swanson, Shea Swanson, Evelyn Wessling, Harper Wessling, Sam Riggs, Zoe Riggs, Caleb Harvey, Rosalie O'Regan, Baby boy O'Regan, Baby girl Linton, Karma Taylor, Serenity Connell, Donte Wessling, Dominic Twait, Theodore Linton, Tristan Parks and Christopher Hovland, and many nieces and nephews.
Lora was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, son David, sister Gloria August and a nephew Mike Clayton.
