It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Katie Graham-Basso, of Matawan, who departed this life on June 30, 2025, at the age of 85. Born in 1940 to the late Isreal and Maggie Spain, Katie's legacy is one of strength, determination, and love.
Katie made history in 1980 as one of the first women to become a Train Operator with the New York City Transit Authority, breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry. She later transitioned to becoming a dedicated Union Representative, where she advocated fiercely for workers' rights until her well-deserved retirement.
Outside of her professional accomplishments, Katie had a deep passion for life's simple pleasures. She had an extraordinary green thumb, tending to her garden with love and care, and her talent for sewing created countless treasured items for her family. Whether in her garden or at her sewing machine, Katie's nurturing spirit shone brightly.
Katie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph Basso, her son Joseph Graham, her great-grandson Josiah Graham, as well as her brothers John and William Spain, and her sister Eva Spain.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family. Katie is survived by her children: James Graham Jr., Janet Campbell (and her husband Marquis Campbell), and Catherine Graham. She will also be deeply missed by her ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Katie's warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on July 20, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Days Funeral Home, located at 361 Maple Pl in Keyport, NJ. All who knew and loved Katie are welcome to join us in honoring her memory. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Katie, please visit our Tree Store.
