Kay Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Dec. 29, 2025.
Mary Katharine "Kay" (Axline) Smith passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at her daughter's home in Palisade, Colorado.

Kay was born on January 4, 1942, to George and Mabel Axline in Pratt, Kansas. She grew up in a loving home with her parents, her brother George, and her sisters Ann and Carol. Kay spent her childhood in Pratt, graduating from Pratt High School in 1960, and attended Pratt Junior College for one year.

On July 1, 1961, Kay married Fred Smith, and the couple moved to rural Sublette, Kansas, where they raised their two children, Scott and Diana. While her children were young, Kay dedicated herself as a loving stay-at-home mother and also served as Secretary for the Haskell County Fair. As her children grew, she embarked on a 35-year career in the insurance industry, building a reputation for dedication and care.

Kay was deeply involved in her community. She was a devoted member of the Sublette United Methodist Church and an active participant in the Jaycee Jaynes. She supported every endeavor her children pursued, from 4-H and Cub Scouts to school activities, and was always ready to lend a hand or cheer from the sidelines. One of her greatest joys was the card game bridge, and she enjoyed playing with numerous bridge clubs throughout the years.

She is survived by her daughter, Diana Metzler and husband Don of Palisade, CO; and grandsons, Monty Metzler and Brent Metzler, also of Palisade, CO.

Kay is preceded in death by her son, Scott Smith; her parents, George and Mabel Axline; sisters, Elizabeth Ann Slief and Carol Wilson; and her brother, George Axline.

There will be no viewing, as cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 5, 2025, at the Sublette United Methodist Church. Friends and family are invited to join for cake and coffee following the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery in Pratt, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sublette United Methodist Church, in care of Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory, PO Box 1200, Sublette, KS 67877. Condolences may be left online at WeeksFamilyFuneralHome.com.
