He graduated from Eldora High School and was an honored member of the F.F.A. organization, Pine Lake Chapter. After graduation, he farmed with his Dad as well as for neighbors before serving his country in WWII. During his time in the service, he earned the rank of Tech Sergeant and served as Motor Officer for the 135th Army Engineers in Hokkaido, Japan. The family lived in Eldora until 1960, when Ken operated a 60-cow dairy operation with the help of his son, Duane, who was then five. In 1965, the family moved to Knoxville, Iowa where Ken was the proud owner of his own farm, The Ken Barz Dairy. In his spare time, he completed a course and became certified in diesel mechanics. In his later years, he operated The Bar-z family and poultry farm in Statham, Georgia alongside his son Duane.
