Kenneth David Crews, 74, former longtime McAllen, Texas resident and more recently of San Antonio, died Monday, March 4, 2024, at Raider Ranch in Lubbock, Texas.
Ken was born July 25, 1949, in Austin, Texas to Phyllis Drew Crews and Calloway Seale Crews.
He graduated from Austin's Sidney B. Lanier High School in 1967. While at Lanier, he got an extracurricular education in government and politics serving as a page in the Texas House of Representatives. Later, still in high school, Ken worked as a clerk at one of Austin's Rylander's Supermarkets, learning the value of hard work.
After graduation, he attended San Marcos' Southwest Texas University, pledging Phi Kappa Psi. In the fall of 1969, Ken joined the Army Reserves. Ken served as an active reservist for six years.
Returning to college at the University of Houston, Ken completed his undergraduate degree there. He then began working on his law degree, graduating from South Texas College of Law in 1979 He worked for several years at Western Geophysical while in school. In November 1980 he accepted a position with CNG Producing Co. in McAllen. He went on to spend the majority of his career as an oil and gas attorney in the Rio Grande Valley for Mayfair Minerals and as a real estate attorney for RIOCO. Ken retired in 2012, moving to San Antonio.
He had been involved in the McAllen community in many ways, serving on the McAllen School Board and teaching at a local university. In addition, he served on a number of other boards, and remained involved in the Texas Bar Association. He also was active in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, serving and participating in chapter efforts to benefit the fraternity. His love of tennis kept him active as a player and spectator, traveling to Wimbledon and the US Open. Some of his most memorable experiences were from family trips to Hawaii, Canada, England and Scotland with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his brothers and their wives, Mike and Becky Crews of Georgetown, Kentucky and Bill and Susan Crews of Austin; his former wife Beth Presley of Cedar Park; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Jennifer Crews of Lubbock, and his daughter Michelle and her husband Mike Gardner of League City, Texas, as well as his three beloved grandchildren, Sam and Max Crews and Presley Gardner. Ken adored his cousins as well, enjoying the annual family reunions where he loved sharing stories and uncovering genealogical facts.
Ken stayed in touch with close friends over the years, friends he loved like family. Ken's sense of humor gave those around him much joy.
At Ken's request, no funeral or memorial service will be held.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff, nurses and caregivers from Southwest Regional Wound Care, Caprock Home Health, Cornerstone Caregiving, Bridge Hospice, and the incredible folks at Raider Ranch.
