HOWLAND - Kenneth L. Hurd, 86, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025.
He was born on June 8, 1939, in Farmington, to Paul and Dorthea Hurd and graduated from Farmington High School, where he earned varsity letters in junior high before continuing to The Ohio State and Kent State universities. He taught at Mathews High School and in the Maplewood Schools, while coaching basketball, track and volleyball.
Kenneth spent eight years in the National Guard and Army Reserves. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting and traveling. He mastered building furniture for his family members.
Wherever Kenneth went he was recognized by those he touched in the community who couldn't help but notice his blue eyes, appreciated his unwavering integrity and will miss his kindness.
On Aug. 11, 1957, Ken married his high school sweetheart, Linda Silvernail, who died Jan. 26, 2018.
Linda L. Silvernail Hurd was born July 4, 1939, to Ralph and Dorothy Silvernail of Mesopotamia.
Earning a scholarship from Farmington High School, before graduating in 1957, she married fellow track star, Kenneth Hurd before attending The Ohio State University.
Linda taught in the Liberty and Braceville schools, where she designed a program for home economics students learning childcare while providing daycare so teen parents could finish high school. She retired from Lakeview High School, where she led 4H sewing.
Influenced by growing up on a dairy farm, Linda raised AKC poodles for over 50 years and taught dog grooming. She often provided jobs and career mentoring to those in need through the successful business she built remodeling properties to rent. She was known for her style, her compassion and sensible solutions. She is missed by surviving brother, Lee (Linda) Silvernail.
Kenneth is survived by sister, Juanita Shick of Leavittsburg; brothers, Dean of Ashtabula, and Paul of Kinsman, and. Along with wife, Linda, was preceded by his brother, Lynn.
Linda and Kenneth are survived by their son, Glen of Girard; daughter, Heidi (Kent) of Missouri; and granddaughter, Katerina (Grant) Summers of Missouri.
A memorial service for Kenneth, together again with Linda, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 17, 2025, at Farmington Community Church, 240 W. College St., West Farmington, OH 44491.
