Private family inurnment will be in Shueyville Cemetery.
Ken was born June 18, 1952, to Clarence & Alice (Dougherty) Johnson in Waukon, Iowa and the family moved to Shueyville when he was a child. He graduated from Prairie High School in 1970.
After graduating high school, Ken followed in his father's footsteps and went into the construction business. He started his own company, Ken Johnson Construction, in 1977. He was an expert custom home builder, and part of his legacy was left in every home he built over the past 50 years. When he was not working, his time was spent with his family. He loved his family with everything he had and worked tirelessly to give them the world. Even when working around his house, his daughters wanted to be around him as much as possible, whether that was in his office or out in the shop. It gave him a great sense of fulfillment seeing the entire extended family he loved so dearly come together for holidays, playing cards, birthdays, or butchering beef. Ken was a second father figure to many in his family including many of his nieces and nephews. He had a willingness to step in and help whether it be by giving work to someone who had recently fallen on hard times or helping with other's projects or giving another perspective on how to solve a problem. He was always pleased when the younger generation would come to him for guidance.
Ken looked forward to his yearly fishing trips in Canada, enjoyed pheasant hunting with his dogs, and the weekends in Decorah for deer hunting. Later in life, his hobbies included gardening and enjoying nature; he always looked forward to fishing at his pond with his kids and grandkids. Ken made many true friends along the road in life, earning the respect and admiration from those who had a chance to know him.
Ken is survived by his three daughters, Gina (Matt) Reynolds of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Johnson (Gary Petrick) of Fairfax, and Kelly (Sean) Kelly of La Porte City; grandkids Kyra and Jacob Reynolds; sisters Joan Chalupsky of Shueyville and Judy (Jerry) Nicholls of Solon; his brothers Dan (Pat) Johnson of Shueyville, Don Johnson of Walford; and sister-in-law Becky Johnson of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife Linda Johnson (whom he married in 1974); brother Ed Johnson; brother-in-law Jim Chalupsky; and sister-in-law Sherry Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the
American Cancer Society.
