Kenneth Powers Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Kenneth Russell "Ken" Powers, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. He was the devoted husband of Rose Powers and a beloved father to Becky (Kevin), Stephen (Jessi), and Nathan (Liz). As a proud grandfather to Leo Patenaude, Dina Conroy (Michael), Dillon Conroy, Cora Brown, and Evan Brown, Ken brought warmth and joy to every moment. He is survived by his brothers Timothy (Nannette) and William (Tia), and remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Ethel Powers, and his brother, David Powers.
Ken devoted over four decades as an attorney with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Air Force Reserves. A lifelong train enthusiast, he amassed an impressive collection of books, magazines, and model trains. For 25 years, Ken served as an elder at Pathway Vineyard, and together with his wife Rose, co founded StreetLight Community Outreach Ministries, a nonprofit established to uplift Prince William County's most vulnerable, serving the poor and homeless.
Ken was a man anchored by deep faith, unassuming humility, and unwavering love. Though he excelled as an attorney, he never sought recognition. Instead, he poured himself out in service to "the least of these," embodying Christ's compassion in both word and deed.
For over 16 years, Ken served as President of the ministry he helped to establish. But the testimony of his life was seen in action: week after week, Ken drove into the woods and shelters to personally bring homeless neighbors to StreetLight's outreach dinners-and then return them safely to their camps. At each gathering, he spoke words of grace, reminding everyone they are seen, loved, and never forgotten by God.
Even as his health declined, Ken's heart for the broken never wavered. He walked alongside the most destitute, offering not just resources, but fellowship and compassion. He loved fiercely, gave generously, and led faithfully.
Friends may call at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 13111 Minnieville Road, Woodbridge, VA 22192, on Thursday, August 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
