Kermit M. Ratchford, Sr., of Frederick County, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025. He was born on January 16, 1943, in Frederick County, the son of the late Douglas Ratchford and Elsie Hartley.
Kermit attended school in Stephens City and later completed his education at James Wood High School. He dedicated over three decades to his career as a commercial truck driver, retiring from Consolidated Freightways in 1999 after 35 years of loyal service. He was a proud and active member of the Teamsters Union throughout his working career.
He is lovingly remembered by his children from his first wife, Joan Clark: Karen J. Shimp and her husband, Jeff, along with their children, Kory and Jessica, and grandsons, Kaiden and Jace; Kermit M. Ratchford, Jr. and his wife, Marie, and their daughter Jennifer; Koby M. Ratchford and his wife, Robyn and their children, Kyra and Sophia, and his daughter Kci; Kristopher M. Ratchford and his wife, Beth, and their daughter, Morgan, of Woodbine, Maryland; and from his second wife, Donna Carter: Derek M. Ratchford; and Kelsey L. Dusharm and her husband, Derek, with their children, Wyatt and Harper.
Kermit is also survived by his sister, Judy Carper of Middletown, Virginia. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Joan Clark and his brothers, Ronald Ratchford and Darrell Ratchford; and his beloved granddaughter, Jennifer Ratchford.
Kermit will be remembered for his love of the outdoors-especially hunting and gardening-as well as his passion for working on cars and riding his Harley Davidson. He also found joy in spending time with friends at the local McDonald's, where they were known as the "Old Man's Club."
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Jones Funeral Home on Friday, September 19, 2025, beginning at 6:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM, also at Jones Funeral Home, followed by burial at his final resting place at Mount Olive Cemetery in Hayfield, Virginia.
In honor of Kermit's deep love for the outdoors and his strong belief in the values of the Boy Scouts, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Boy Scouts of America, Troop 10, in lieu of flowers.
