Kevin Martin Kay, Born December 25, 1957, Went home April 29, 2024.
Survived by his wife Catherine, children Jonathan (Ashley) Kay, Meghan (Tim) Morrison, and Shannon (Nicholas) Summers. Grandchildren Elizabeth, Savannah, and Kagan. Siblings Michael and Pam Falls, Kelly (Don) Sladoje, Kerry Kay. Niece, Lucy Falls, and nephews Ryan Kay and Brian Falls. Numerous cousins.
Kevin graduated from Hilliard High School Class of 1976 where he was a member of the "In the Know" Team and played trumpet in the band and Varsity Basketball. He then attended Capital University where he obtained a Masters in Event Planning as President of Schaaf Hall and The Ohio State University. Kevin is a Lifelong Member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Kevin was awarded the Chevalier Award (highest honor) while Master Counselor of the Hilliard Chapter of DeMolay in the 1970s. He is also a Member of the Hilliard Masonic Lodge.
Born on Christmas Day Kevin ironically was given the Christlike gift of naturally wanting to help other people all the time. Need money, a ride to work or the doctor, a ride to the airport at two in the morning, help to move, giant rocks hand carried off your property, a jump start, food, or clothing Kevin would find a way to provide as he worked more than one job most of his life to ensure nobody in or outside his family suffered.
One of Kevin's gifts was coaching. He was constantly reading and researching new training techniques and coaching strategies. He was ahead of the curve in drills and implemented a no-huddle offense with twelve-year-olds in 1994. His "odd" drills in the early nineties are now commonplace in major college football programs.
Kevin made football fun, but his best coaching gifts were utilized in basketball where with him teaching the basics he only had one season with more than one loss. He was obsessed with "blocking out" much like the buffalo in the Buffalo Wild Wings commercials.
Kevin was also "The internet" before the internet was created. If you were having a disagreement over who led the majors in batting average in 1969? or who orbited the moon while Neil walked on it? You could call Kevin and get the answer any time of day or night. Not only would he give you the answer he would give you a little backstory on every response.
Kevin loved knowledge, especially personal knowledge of the people around him as his opening line when meeting new people was "Where are you from?" This would lead to some of his standard follow-up questions eventually ending up that this person Kevin had just met had a mutual friend or friends and they would soon be trading old war stories like they had known each other for years. It was another "Gift."
Kevin loved creating new relationships and maintaining them as his family got used to hearing "Oh you are Kevin Kay's brother/sister/etc." after introducing themselves to new people.
Kevin looked forward to attending the 8 am Service every week at Trinity Episcopal Church, enjoying coffee afterward with the beautiful members of the "dirty dozen" worshippers. This was followed by Sunday Brunch at the Olympic Diner or White Castle, with a debriefing on the past week with his brother.
If you knew Kevin Kay, you were blessed by witnessing his unending need to put others first or simply do unto others as you would have done unto you.
If we could all live with the limitless love that Kevin Kay had for others for just one day, what a perfect day it would be!
