Kevin J. Maher, 69, of Roseland, NJ passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 8th, 2025 after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Kevin was the fourth of five children born to Martin and Mary (Hannigan) Maher. He was raised in Dumont and graduated from Dumont High School in 1974, where he was a successful athlete on the football and track and field teams. He went on to play football at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, graduating with a B.A. in History and Education in 1978.
Kevin was a lifelong learner and earned additional degrees in Electrical Engineering Technology (B.S.), Business Management (M.S.), and Computer Information Systems (M.S.) from New Jersey Institute of Technology. He worked as a sales engineer, application engineer, and product manager in the electronics industry for years and often traveled internationally for business. He transitioned to teaching in 2012 and taught engineering and AutoCAD at Applied Technology High School in Paramus from 2015 until January 2025. He was a beloved member of the school community. Many students referred to him as their favorite teacher, and his classes were filled with hands-on projects, jokes, stories, and valuable college and career advice.
He married Marilyn Andersen in 1989 and they were blessed with three children, Kristin, Erik, and Karin. Kevin was a loving husband and devoted father to his three children, supporting them in all their endeavors. He was a constant presence at their sporting events and was especially proud to have witnessed each of them graduate from college and pave their own unique way in life.
Kevin's favorite place was Lake George in the Adirondacks, where he spent many joyful summers throughout his life in and around the family cottage, swimming, snorkeling, boating, waterskiing, and camping with his family on the lake's many islands.
He enjoyed reading and was passionately curious about the world, especially science and history. He had a sharp memory and enjoyed sharing obscure trivia and facts with those around him. He enjoyed working with his hands, taking on home improvement projects, and fixing anything and everything around the house.
Kevin was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn and three children Kristin, Erik, an Icelandic language teacher in Reykjavik, Iceland and Karin, a Coast Guard Operations Officer, LTJG in Kodiak, AK; siblings Bill (Debbie), Marty (Kathleen), Cathy (LaVerne), and Mickey (Wendy); and his cherished nieces and nephews Jennifer, Meredith, Eric, Sean, Joseph, Margaret, Marty, Patrick, Catey, David, Aaron, and Kyran and their families.
A memorial service honoring Kevin's life will be held at Calvary Evangelical Free Church, 450 Fells Road, Essex Fells, NJ on February 22nd at 11:00 AM. After the service the family invites everyone to join them in the church gym for a repast with light refreshments and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kevin J. Maher Memorial Scholarship Fund for students at Applied Technology High School would be appreciated.
