Dr. Soo Kil Choi, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and a respected Radiation Oncologist, passed away peacefully at home in
Canton, MA on September 29, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Ulsan, South Korea, Dr. Choi's life was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a dedication to the well-being of others.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science and Medical Degree from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Choi's passion for medicine led him to the United States in 1972. He completed his Internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Buffalo, NY and his Residency in Radiation Oncology at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Choi's medical career began at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY, and he later served the community at Brockton Hospital as a Radiation Oncologist until his retirement in 2007. He continued working in the medical profession as a locum tenens until 2018. His colleagues admired him for his intelligence, dedication and compassionate care, and his patients remembered him for his unwavering kindness and expertise and his irresistible humor that brought laughter and joy to so many in some of their hardest moments.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Choi was a man of many interests. He had an enduring love for music, teaching himself to play both the guitar and piano. He was also a gifted singer, and his musical talents brought joy to countless gatherings with friends and family, where he was often the heart and soul of the entertainment. He absolutely loved making people laugh and sing and brought such a healthy perspective to life. Dr. Choi was also an avid golfer, a member of the Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton, MA, and later at Lebaron Hills Country Club in Lakeville, MA. Golfing with his wife and son was one of his favorite pastimes and provided some of his fondest memories. His love for the sport was matched only by his enthusiasm for watching his kids and grandchildren compete and play their respective sports whether it be in golf, tennis, little league baseball, field hockey, swimming, flag football, track, mixed martial arts or soccer.
Dr. Choi's interests were as broad as they were deep. He took great pleasure in tending to his garden, an activity that reflected his nurturing nature. A voracious reader, he was also an avid historian, often engaging in discussions about historical events with a perspective that was informed and insightful. Dr. Choi loved traveling - seeing and experiencing the world himself and always learning and appreciating different cultures, histories, foods and perspectives. When home at the end of the day, you could often find him sitting outside by a fire, enjoying a glass of whiskey, thinking about life and taking in the nature surrounding him.
Those who knew Dr. Choi will remember him as a friendly, funny and intelligent man, always ready with a warm smile, a witty joke, a listening ear and always eager to engage. He was the beloved husband of Jung Hi Choi (Kang), a partnership that was a testament to love and mutual respect. A dedicated father to Alex Choi and his wife Kelly of Hanover, and Lina Yoshida and her husband Hiro of Newton, he instilled in his children the values of hard work, education, and the importance of family. Dr. Choi's role as a grandfather to Kira and Koji Yoshida, and Ella and Ethan Choi, was one he cherished deeply, and his legacy of kindness, humor and wisdom will continue to live on through them. He was also the loving uncle of Jungku, Jinku and Taeku Lee, the respected brother of Mal Ja Choi, Su Ja Choi, and Yoon Ok Choi, the adored brother-in-law of Jung Sun and Jae Hoon Sim and the beloved uncle to David and Michael Sim.
Dr. Soo Kil Choi's life was a portrait of dedication, hard work, love, and service. His absence is deeply felt by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His family takes comfort in the knowledge that his life was well-lived and that his impact on the world was profoundly positive. As we bid farewell to Dr. Soo Kil Choi, we celebrate a life that was rich in accomplishments and abundant in love. His memory will be cherished, his contributions to medicine honored, and the melodies of his music, singing and laughter will resonate in the hearts of those he touched forever.
A private family service will be held at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home in Canton.
