Kurt Griffis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Meeks Mortuary & Crematory - Washington Street Chapel on Dec. 19, 2025.
Kurt Anthony Griffis, age 52, passed away on December 17, 2025. Born on December 5, 1973, Kurt lived a life defined by service, dedication, humor, and an unwavering love for his family, students, and community.
Kurt is survived by his loving wife, Lauren (Royer) Griffis; his sons, Isaac Griffis (wife, Lexie), Zion Griffis, and Levi Griffis (Starr); his parents, Jerry and Jane Griffis; and his sister, Nancy Muncey (husband, Jason) and granddaughters Harper, Hallie & Haven. He was a devoted husband, a proud and involved father and grandfather, and a cherished son and brother.
A proud Muncie Central Bearcat, Class of 1992, Kurt carried his school pride with him throughout his life. Following graduation, he joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. Shortly after, he joined the National Guard, serving honorably for six years, including two years of active duty in Bosnia. His commitment to service and leadership was evident both in uniform and beyond.
To know Kurt, was to know how deeply he loved his family. In true Kurt fashion, he met his beautiful bride 28 years ago wearing overalls and flip flops at Tuhey Park. He was ALWAYS so proud to be "Lauren's Husband". His boys, Isaac, Zion and Levi, quickly added to the lively Griffis family bringing immense joy and excitement to each season of their lives. From soccer fields to Florida beaches, Kurt always prioritized creating memories with his people.
Kurt continued his education at ITT Tech and later at Ball State University, where he earned his teaching degree. Before entering the classroom, he worked for many years at Ontario Systems. During his children's school years, Kurt chose to stay home with his boys, a role he embraced fully and lovingly. His dedication to family during that time was one of his proudest contributions.
Answering a calling to education, Kurt began his teaching career at Wilson Middle School and went on to teach at Delta Middle School and Delta High School. He also served as a beloved soccer coach at Delta High School for many years, shaping young athletes both on and off the field. Whether his title was teacher, coach, mentor, or friend, Kurt impacted countless lives with his encouragement, generosity, and belief in others. He had a beautiful way of impacting people and getting the absolute best out of any person he came in contact with.
Kurt had a laugh that could change the landscape of any room he walked into, and was undeniably contagious. He will be fondly remembered for the joy he brought wherever he went-especially for walking the halls of Delta schools tossing Honey Buns to faculty, a simple gesture that became a legendary symbol of his kindness and humor. He named this weekly event "Sweets and Salvation". He had a gift for turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories, leading family and friends on adventures big and small. Truly, everyone who knew him has a "Kurt Griffis story" to share.
Kurt's legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the students he inspired, the athletes he coached, and the family and friends who loved him deeply. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered ALWAYS.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Delta High School Auditorium.
Kurt would ask that everyone come dressed modestly, as Kurt led a simple life. Birkenstocks are welcome, "with or without socks".
Friends and family may call at Delta High School Auditorium on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, from 12:00 pm until service time at 3:00 pm, with Military Rites conducted by the Delaware County Veteran's Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to the Delta High School Unified Track Team, c/o Delta High School, 3400 State Rd. 28, Muncie, IN 47303.
