Lance Call, 92, of Buna, died Thursday, January 29, 2026. He was born on August 28, 1933, in
Gainesville, Texas, to Nan Morse and Lance Samuel Call.
Lance was a perfectly imperfect man. He loved his family fiercely and had a well-defined sense of right and wrong. A retired airborne Ranger and Master Sergeant in the Army, he was patriotic but was not afraid to speak up when he felt our country was going down an unhonorable path, even when others did not agree with him. Having seen the harsh realities of combat, he was vehemently against war but seldom talked about his own experiences.
He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren deeply. While quiet and reserved around most people, he had a rapier wit and loved to laugh when close friends and family were near. He would laugh so hard at things that tickled him, tears would start to flow. A man of many facets, he collected thousands of vinyl albums, read books on history, listened to everything from Hank Williams Sr. to the Stone Temple Pilots, and loved Broadway plays.
It would be an understatement to say he liked animals. Over the years, he had horses, dogs, cats, ducks, hamsters, geese, flying squirrels, birds, peacocks, and donkeys. For years, Lance worked with injured squirrels, nursing them back to health, then releasing them back into the wild. It was not uncommon for one of the released squirrels to return and take pecans from him, which he always had ready in his shirt pocket. He would take abandoned dogs to the vet to have them check out and "fixed". These dogs would then live on his property until they passed away, always loyal and loving the man who rescued them.
He was reunited with his brother and sister in his later years, after life had taken them in different directions. He took great joy in these renewed relationships, expressing regret that he had not done it sooner.
He was a hard worker who, besides retiring from the Army, also had a career at the Goodyear Chemical Plant in
Beaumont, Texas, retiring in 1995.
Survivors include his children, Elizabeth "Beth" Call Powell; Marion Richard "Hap" Call and his wife, Susan; Lace Call; and Lance Brady Call; grandchildren, Shelby N. Powell II; Lindsey Call Floyd and her husband, Colby; Kaitlyn Elissa Call and her fiancé, Michael Pugh; Allie Elizabeth Call; Clayton Timothy Friddle; Nicole Danielle St Pere; Carly Lane Call; and Olly Rodgers; great-grandchildren, Wylder Floyd, Beau Floyd, Anthony Friddle, Christopher Friddle, and Kaden Carlson; and siblings, Glenn Call and his wife, Eileen; and Katherine Morin.
He is preceded in death by his wife of forty-one years, Judith Brady Call; mother and stepfather, Nan and Marion Hamilton; father, Lance Call; son, Gary; and brother in-law, Roger Morin.
Mr. Call's cremation arrangements were handled by Broussard's Crematorium under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.
