Lanny Rice, 73, of Slaton, Texas, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply.

Born and raised in West Texas, Lanny grew up in Lubbock, where he graduated from Lubbock High School and South Plains College. He carried a lifelong love for the land and way of life West Texas offered. He was the son of Walter Lee, Jr. and Louise Rice, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Rice of Slaton, Texas; his children Lana Warr and husband Roger of Snyder, Texas, Linsie Wilkerson (USAF) and husband Joe (formerly USAF) of San Antonio, Texas, Cassie Griffin of Lubbock, Texas, and Altah Bailey of Slaton, Texas; his older brother Walter Lee Rice, III (formerly U.S. Army) and wife Marsha of Lubbock, Texas; brother-in-law, Jim Wells (formerly U.S. Army) and wife Chloie of Lubbock, Texas; and his grandchildren Seth Smith (formerly U.S. Army), Ragan Smith, Allie Morrison, Olivia Morrison, and Margie Wilkerson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Judy Love and husband Earl, and his brother Tim Rice. Lanny served in the United States Navy Reserve as a medic and also worked as a peace officer, dedicating himself to protecting and serving his community. He was a proud volunteer firefighter with the Slaton Volunteer Fire Department, where he was honored as Volunteer of the Year. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, camping, and tinkering. He also had a special love for his cats, Kameer and Skeeter, who were constant companions and famously “sent” letters to family during boot camp.

A man of deep faith, Lanny’s love for his family—especially his girls—was unmatched.

Rest in peace, Poppa. You will always be loved and remembered
