Larry Marshall Courtright, 84, of Hurricane, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 20, 2025, after a short illness surrounded by love and family. He was born June 12, 1940, on Riders Creek near Hurricane, WV. Larry was a devoted member of Forrest Burdette Methodist Church where he regularly attended. His Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life. His love for God's word was evident in everything he did, his hobby was reading the Bible, and he took great joy in sharing its teachings with others, whether through discussions or simply through his actions.
He was a retired carpenter from the Charleston Carpenters Local. In addition to his work as a craftsman, Larry was also a small business owner who built homes in the Hurricane area for the past 60 years, leaving a lasting legacy.
Larry was a graduate of Hurricane High School, Class of 1959. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping, and exploring new places with his beloved family by his side. He cherished his time as a Sunday School teacher and a youth league baseball coach, helping to shape the lives of young people in his community. Larry loved nothing more than a good cup of hot coffee, and he could often be found around town sipping his favorite coffee while chatting with anyone who crossed his path. He was known for his kind and friendly nature and had the rare gift of making friends everywhere he went-he truly never met a stranger. He also loved telling stories and as a great storyteller he had an amazing way of bringing each tale to life, leaving everyone around him laughing and feeling connected. He will be remembered not only for his work ethic and his devotion to his family, but also for his big heart and unwavering kindness to those around him.
Larry's greatest love was for his family, especially his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 62 years. He is survived by her, Kathryn Jean (Dick) Courtright. They were married during a blizzard on January 23, 1963. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and memories. He is also survived by his son Gregory Marshall Courtright and his wife Tracie of Hurricane, son Earl Derrick Courtright and his wife Marina of Big Fork, Montana, and his cherished grandchildren, Gracyn Dawn Courtright, Morgan Dell Courtright, Andrew Wisniewski, and Sofia Alexis Courtright. He is also survived by his very special niece Linda (Henson) Clark, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his pride and joy, his only daughter, Marsha Dell (Courtright) Wisniewski, as well as his parents Kenneth and Rosa (Croson) Courtright, brothers Harle (Pete), Oscar, Earl, and sister Ruth (Courtright) Henson.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Valley View Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 12 noon prior to the service.
Larry's kind soul, his infectious laughter, his love for storytelling, and his genuine love for people will forever be remembered by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, love, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
