Larry Edward Gaines, 78, currently of Maud, OK and previously of Tecumseh, OK, transitioned from this life on February 13, 2026 at OU Medical Center.
He was born on September 16,1947 in Stockton, CA to William Edward and Grace LaFlora (Renfro) Gaines.
Larry grew up in a military family and lived several places, including Germany, before his family settled in Maud where he forged lifelong friendships.
Larry graduated from Maud High School and attended The University of Oklahoma prior to enlisting to serve his country in the United States Army during Vietnam from 1968-1971. During his service he achieved the rank of E-6, then called a tech six sergeant. He was a combat medic in the 8th infantry division and assigned to the Long Range Reconnaissance and Patrol (LRRP) unit during his tour in Vietnam. During his service he earned his combat medic badge, two bronze stars and a purpleheart. He also sang in the All Army Choir. Subsequently, he graduated from East Central University earning a bachelor's degree. Larry married the love of his life, Donna (Crawford) Gaines on April 29,1975 in Bakersfield, CA. They were happily married for 38 years. He worked for the Social Security Administration until he retired in 1999.
Larry was a devoted husband, father, son, and friend. He enjoyed football (especially OU), reading, golf, and riding motorcycles. He was very proud that he was able to red shirt for the OU football team prior to his service in Vietnam. He is known for saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff."
Larry is survived by his daughter, Andrea Gaines; son, Sammy Nye Jr. and daughter, Carrie Miller of Midwest City, OK; sister and brother-in-law, Doris Jean and Bob Ditter; and many other family and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna Lee Gaines; brother, Terry Gaines; nephew, Steven Gaines; and grandson, Richard Davis.
Viewing will be on Friday, February 20, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, OK.
A memorial service celebrating Larry’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, OK.
