Larry T. Hemminger, age 85 of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, Michigan.
Larry was born on April 21, 1939 to the late Orley C. and Maudie K. (Hoke) Hemminger in Old Fort, Ohio. He attended Attica High School and Carnegie College of Cleveland for Medical Technology. Larry served in the United States Army, where he was a member of the Army Chorus and was deployed as an Army Medic during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Larry married Terri (Moore) December 18, 1970 and they raised three children in Shelby. He worked most of his career at Shelby Memorial Hospital as the Chief Medical Technologist and retired from MedCentral Shelby. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, American Medical Technologists and the American Legion.
Larry was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians/Guardians, Browns and Cavs, and the Ohio State University sports teams. He coached Shelby Girls Softball and Boys Little League Baseball teams. He sang in the church choir, performing many solos and singing for weddings. Larry enjoyed life and people most of all. He was very social, friendly, caring, and kidding. He was patient with kids, which made him a great dad, grandfather and coach. Larry will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
Those who will cherish his memories include his best friend, Terri Hemminger; his children: Heather (Michael) Scherzer of Stevensville, Michigan, Hope (Heath) Fluharty of Centerville, Ohio and Chad (Sara) Hemminger of Columbus, Ohio; his grandchildren: Lelah Scherzer, Tyra Fluharty, Carson Hemminger, Owen Wortman and Landen Wortman; his sisters: Oral Kirby of Tiffin, Ohio, MaryLou Neikirk of Republic, Ohio, Betty Paul of Tiffin, Ohio and Bonny Rhoad of Tiffin, Ohio; his sister-in-laws: Edith Hemminger of Republic, Ohio and Judy Hemminger of Avon, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orley and Maudie Hemminger and his siblings: Lelah Daniel, Donald Hemminger, Dana Fretz, Xenith Allgyre, George Hemminger, Daryl Hemminger.
Friends and family are welcomed to honor Larry's life at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby, Monday, January 13, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM with Military honors performing immediately following the service at the funeral home.
In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the Wounded Warrior Project at P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
