Larry Dwain McNabb, age 79 of Salt Lick, passed away January 19 at St. Claire Hospital in Morehead, Kentucky. He was born on November 16, 1945 in Hazel Green, Kentucky to the late Espie Banks McNabb and Bessie Lovelace McNabb. Dwain worked on tugboats up and down the Mississippi before entering the Army. He served in the Army as Artillery Specialist during the Vietnam War in Pleiku, Vietnam. Upon returning home, he was offered a job as a tugboat captain but he turned it down because he wanted to be home with his family. Dwain was always a hard worker and liked to stay busy. He would work all day then come home to work in tobacco or help at the family grocery store. Dwain retired after 37 years of working as a machinist at UK Department of Engineering and Mining. During his time there, he made a part for the UK solar car and a vacuum used in research for moon rocks. Dwain also used his talent as a machinist to participate in the making of a lunar mobile for NASA. He was a Kentucky Colonel, an avid reader, a tobacco farmer and a gardener, Tinkering and building new things was a favorite of his. Dwain was a man of Christian faith and family was everything to him. He loved his daughter and two granddaughters very much. They were his pride and joy. Dwain was a dedicated, loving husband to his wife of 56 years, a father and a papaw whom will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Billie Jean McCarty McNabb; one daughter, Carmen Copher and her husband, Shane; one brother, Relzda McNabb and his wife, Debbie; one sister, Reda Calulot; two granddaughters, Kyla Copher and Jenna Copher; a nephew and special friend, Daniel Shelton; several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred McNabb and Martineze McNabb; one sister in law, Cathy McNabb.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home.
Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Richardson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in McNabb Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Shane Copher, Daniel Shelton, Jonathan Sorrell, Chris Calulot, Stephen Calulot and Brandon Temple.
Honorary pallbearers will be Makai Calulot and Travis McNabb.
